BURLINGTON, VT --- Deven Marrero went 3-for-5 with a pair of bunt singles and the Lowell Spinners used a three-run fifth inning  to take the first of a three-game series at historic Centennial Field with a 6-5 New York-Penn League victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters on Thursday evening.

The Lake Monsters jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two runs in the second inning. Three straight two-out singles from Jacob Tanis, John Wooten and newcomer Bruce Maxwell plated Vermont's first inning run, while Chad Lewis had an RBI double and Brett Vertigan an RBI single as the Lake Monsters put together four straight hits off Lowell starter Mike Augliera.

Lowell began its comeback with a solo homer from Kendrick Perkins with two outs in the fourth off Vermont starter Julio Ramos, who left after allowing just the homer and four hits with four strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. The Spinners then scored their three runs (only one earned) off reliever Deyvi Jimenez in the fifth for a 4-3 lead. Lowell added two more runs in the seventh on a Mike Miller RBI single and throwing error by Vermont catcher Rhett Stafford on a double steal.

Vermont got those two runs back in the bottom of the seventh as Chris Bostick walked and Tanis followed with a double off reliever Leandro Marin, who then uncorked back-to-back wild pitches allowing Bostick and Tanis to score cutting the Lowell lead to 6-5. Kevin Brahney tossed a perfect eighth inning and then worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season.

Wooten was 3-for-4 on the night and is now hitting .429 (18-for-42) on the season. Tanis, Chad Lewis and Dayton Alexander each had two hits for the Vermont (6-5), which outhit the Spinners 12-9 but left nine runners on base. Francisco Taveras (1-0) tossed four scoreless innings of relief to earn the win for Lowell (5-6), which snapped a five-game losing streak with the win.

The Lake Monsters and Spinners will meet again on Friday starting at 7:05 pm in the second of the three-game series. It is also the first of six "Friday Night Firework" shows at Centennial with fireworks immediately following the game.
