-SPIKES LOOK FOR SIXTH WIN IN A ROW: The first-place State College Spikes begin the second half of a six-game road trip tonight as they face the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in the first game of a three-game set at Eastwood Field. The Spikes swept a three-game series from the Scrappers at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park this past weekend. Mahoining Valley holds a 33-30 all-time series lead and a 19-11 lead in games played in Ohio.
-LAST GAME: Barrett Barnes collected four hits last night as the State College Spikes got back to their winning ways with a 6-2 victory against the Batavia Muckdogs at Dwyer Stadium. Barnes went 4-for-5 and scored two runs. Ryan Hornback also starred for the Spikes, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI's. The Spikes had six doubles on the game. Clay Holmes got the win for State College to go to 2-0 on the year. The 19-year-old gave up one hit and five walks in five innings, but only had one unearned run scored against him. Holmes also struck out four batters.
-CREASY HEADS TO THE HILL FOR THIRD SPIKES START: Right-hander Jason Creasy gets the start for State College tonight. Creasy, the Pirates' eighth-round draft choice in 2011, recovered from taking the loss on Opening Night June 18 at Williampsort to throw four innings of one-run ball against the Scrappers this past Saturday. Creasy yielded three hits, walked a batter, and hit one while striking out four.
-SCRAPPERS' DAVENPORT FACES FAMILIAR FOE TONIGHT: Left-hander Geoffrey Davenport is slated to start for Mahoning Valley tonight. Davenport gave up three runs on five hits over four innings to take the loss against the Spikes on Saturday in State College. The southpaw also struck out two. Davenport was drafted out of the University of Arkansas in 2011, and missed much of last season due to an elbow injury.
-SPIKES MOUND STAFFERS START STRONG: Top Pirates pitching prospect Luis Heredia is currently just out of the top ten in the New York-Penn League in ERA after allowing just one earned run over his first nine innings in a Spikes uniform. Heredia has also struck out seven batters and walked two in his first two outings. Clay Holmes (10 IP) and Joan Montero (8 1/3 IP) have not allowed an earned run as of yet, with Montero's 13 strikeouts placing third in the league.
-SPIKE MARKS: Barrett Barnes is tied for the NYPL lead in times hit by pitch with 4, and leads in steals with 5...State College as a team is now 16-for-20 in steal attempts to top the NYPL...The Spikes have neither hit nor allowed a home run in the season's first ten games
