Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (27-29) collected another wild walk-off win at home, their fourth at Security Service Field this season, defeating the Tucson Padres (16-40) 8-7 with third baseman Brendan Harris taking a hit by a pitch by Padres reliever Cory Burns with the bases loaded to seal the Sox fourth win in five meetings with Tucson in 2012.

The Sky Sox had blown a 7-4 lead in the top of the ninth inning, but shortstop Tommy Field led off the bottom of the ninth with a double off the left field wall that nearly left the park, then was moved in to position on a sacrifice bunt by center-fielder Tim Wheeler. The Padres then walked second baseman Hernan Iribarren and right-fielder Andrew Brown intentionally to load the bases, who had combined for five RBI on the night up to that point, to get to Harris who had not had a hit in the game. The Sky Sox have now notched walk-off wins at home this season on a wild pitch, a throwing error by a center fielder and now Harris' hit by pitch.

The Sky Sox built their 7-4 heading in to the ninth inning on a RBI single by second baseman Hernan Iribarren and a two-out, two-RBI double by first baseman Chad Tracy, but the Padres rallied to tie the score at 7-7 with a three-run ninth off Colorado Springs reliever Zach Putnam on two hits, two walks and a wild pitch. It was the second lead the Sky Sox blew before the wild ninth inning, as Tucson also tied up the game in the eighth on a RBI single by second baseman Anthony Contreras after the Sky Sox led 4-3.

The Padres led 3-1 after five and a half innings but only managed to score two runs on two separate bases loaded, no-out situations against Sky Sox starter Tyler Chatwood. Andrew Brown stepped to the plate with two outs in the sixth and blasted a three-run homer, his team-leading seventh of the season, over the left field wall to give the Sox their first lead of the game and also giving him 42 RBI on the season which lead the Sky Sox and rank fifth in the Pacific Coast League. The Colorado Springs third through sixth hitters accounted for all eight of the Sky Sox RBIs in the win.

In the second game of the series, the Sox will send out left-hander Drew Pomeranz (2-2, 2.29 ERA), who has lost his last two starts for Colorado Springs after not allowing a run in his first 11.2 innings with the Sox. Pomeranz will face off with Padres right-hander Anthony Reyes (0-1, 6.23 ERA) at 1:05 p.m. MT.
