Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Green Bay Gamblers build a lead, then methodically preserved it Friday in Game Three of the Clark Cup Championship series, becoming the first team to defeat the Waterloo Black Hawks on their home ice at Young Arena since early March, and taking a two-games-to-one advantage in the best-of-five set.
The Gamblers scored to pull ahead at 17:51 of the first period. Alex Broadhurst's pass clicked with Sam Herr, who snapped a wrist shot off of Stephon Williams and into the net. Just over a minute later, Green Bay thought they had added to their edge during a power play, but a puck which was redirected into the net from the top of the crease was ruled to have been touched by a high stick, and the goal was overturned.
The Hawks tied the game 3:05 into the second when Mike Huntebrinker fought up the wall and centered a pass for Mitch Witek to score his second goal of the series. However, Kyle Novak put the Gamblers back in front, curling off the left half wall and firing a wrister into the net. Novak set up a Grant Arnold insurance goal with a cross-ice feed, redirected in with a quick touch at 14:58.
In the final frame, Green Bay pulled back to play conservatively, sending just two shots on frame. In the process, they limited the Black Hawks to eleven chances while blocking several more. Ryan McKay made 31 saves in one of his busiest performances of the postseason. Williams suffered the loss with 16 saves. Waterloo had not lost on home ice since March 9th, with 15 games played at Young Arena in between.
Game Four of the championship series is Saturday evening at Young Arena, beginning at 7:05 PM. If the Hawks win to force a fifth game, it would be played in Green Bay Wednesday. Tickets for the final game of the year in Waterloo are available from waterlooblackhawks.com and the Black Hawks Box Office by calling (319) 291-7680. Good seats still remain but are going fast.
