
Montilla Plays Long Ball in Series-Clinching Win

FORT WAYNE - Gerson Montilla hit a solo home run in the sixth inning Friday and the South Bend Silver
Hawks (20-15) defeated the Fort Wayne TinCaps 3-2 in front of 6,233 fans at Parkview Field. With the
win the Silver Hawks took the series from the TinCaps two games to one.
Montilla's solo home run off Ruben Mejia tied the game 2-2 in the sixth inning. Marc Bourgeois followed
with a double and scored the go-ahead run on another two-bagger, this time from Fidel Pena. Mejia was
saddled with his first loss for Fort Wayne.
The home run for Montilla was his first since August 26, 2011 against Fort Wayne. Montilla hit seven
home runs in 2011.
Right-hander Jesse Darrah (3-1) earned the win for South Bend, allowing just two earned runs on three
hits over six innings. Darrah struck out a season-high six TinCaps and did not issue a walk.
The Silver Hawks bullpen merged to throw three shutout innings. Seth Simmons went 1.1 innings and
struck out two. Keith Hessler went two thirds of an inning scoreless before Willy Paredes got his second
save with a scoreless ninth inning.
The TinCaps put runners on first and third with nobody out in the ninth inning against Paredes. Duanel
Jones hit a ground ball to third and Casey McElroy was thrown out at home for the first out. Moments
later, Paredes got Austin Hedges to roll into a 4-6-3 game-ending double play.
The Silver Hawks took the lead in the fifth inning on an RBI double from Chris Ellison.
The TinCaps answered with two runs in the last half of the inning on an RBI triple from Kyle Gaedele and
a sacrifice fly from Corey Adamson. Gaedele hit two triples in the game for Fort Wayne.
The Silver Hawks begin a four-game series Saturday in Bowling Green, Kentucky - first pitch of game
one is slated for 8:05 P.M. EST. Right-hander J.R. Bradley (2-2, 4.78) starts for South Bend and he will be
opposed by right-hander Jake Floethe (4-1, 3.72).
