Castro Leads Barons to 4-1 Victory over Smokies

Birmingham, AL - Simon Castro picked up his third win of the season as the Birmingham Barons defeated the Tennessee Smokies 4-1 Wednesday afternoon in front of 5,598 fans at Regions Park.

The Barons got on the board in the second on a two-out RBI single by Jared Mitchell. The RBI was his 25th of the season, briefly tying him with teammate Drew Garcia for league RBI lead.

In the third, Garcia would reclaim the lead with a bloop single to right, scoring Tyler Saladino and giving the Barons a 2-0 lead. The hit extended Garcia's team best hitting streak to 13 games. He also has a team-high 17 RBI over his last 12 games and has driven in at least one run in ten of those games.

A Corey Smith single in the fifth drove in another run to give the Barons a 3-0 lead while driving Smokies starter Dallas Beeler (0-2, 3.89) from the game.

Barons starter Simon Castro (3-1, 3.60 allowed one unearned run on three hits while striking out five in 7.0 innings in winning his second-straight start. The lone run scored on a throwing error by Smith in the seventh, putting runners at first and third with one out. Castro was able to escape the jam by educing a double play to end the inning. Santos Rodriguez tossed 2.0 scoreless innings while picking up his third save of the season.

The start of the game was delayed an hour and thirty-three minutes due to rain. With the win, the Barons clinched a series victory over the Smokies and improved to 19-15 on the season. They will look for their fourth win in five games tomorrow night in the series finale as RHP Cameron Bayne (3-0, 2.70) takes the hill against RHP Dae-Eun Rhee (2-1, 5.57). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CT.
