Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Quakes rallied from a 5-2 deficit in front of over 4,000 fans on Friday night, downing Lake Elsinore in the opening game of a three-game series at The Epicenter.
Brian Cavazos-Galvez smashed a game-tying double in the bottom of the sixth, then scored on a throwing error to put the Quakes in front for good, giving them their second straight home win.
Trailing 5-3 in the sixth, Scott Wingo bunted his way aboard against Storm reliever Jerry Sullivan (0-2). Sullivan then hit Joc Pederson with a pitch, putting the tying runs on board for Cavazos-Galvez, who doubled down the left-field line. Wingo scored easily, but Lake Elsinore had a chance to get Pederson at the plate. But Storm shortstop Chris Bisson threw wildly to the plate. The errant ball would skip into the Lake Elsinore dugout, allowing Cavazos-Galvez to score the go-ahead run.
Mike Pericht, who cracked a pair of homers in Thursday's win, homered to open the seventh inning, helping the Quakes take a two-run lead at 7-5.
Freddy Cabrera (1-1), who took over with two outs in the fifth, worked 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn his first win of the year.
Logan Bawcom was dominant out of the closer's role on Friday, striking out all six hitters he faced to earn his sixth save of the year.
Austin Gallagher belted a two-run homer in the fourth, putting the Quakes up 2-0 against Storm starter Burch Smith.
Quakes' starter Garrett Gould was strong through four scoreless innings, but gave up five runs in the fifth, as Lake Elsinore took a 5-2 lead to chase Gould from the game. Rymer Liriano's two-run single broke a 2-2 tie, giving the Storm a 4-2 lead. Liriano then scored on Rancho Cucamonga native Michael Wing's RBI triple, putting the Storm up 5-2.
C.J. Retherford homered in the fifth, pulling the Quakes to within a pair, his first of the year.
Rancho (12-17) will look for their third straight win on Saturday, sending Andres Santiago (2-1) to the mound, opposite Storm righthander Mark Pope (2-2). Everyone will enjoy a post-game Fireworks Spectacular on Saturday night. Great seats are available at 909-481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at The Epicenter...Go Quakes!
