Kernels split doubleheader with West Michigan

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels (11-13) split a doubleheader with the West Michigan Whitecaps (12-12), winning game one on a walk-off home run, but falling behind early in game two. Andy Workman was the lucky number seven hitter for Cedar Rapids in Game One, hitting a walk-off solo home run in the Kernels 4-3 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps. Hitting third-to-last in the order, Workman had three hits in as many at-bats, including the game winner.

With a 1-0 count in the bottom of the seventh - the final inning in double-header games - Workman hit an Kyle Ryan pitch to right field that carried a foot over the wall and into the scorebooks. The walk-off was Workman's second home run in two games.

The Chandler, Arizona native also had the Kernel's first run of the game from his comfortable seven spot. In the third after singling and eventually getting to third base, Kevin Moesquit hit an RBI single. Ryan Jones also scored in the inning on a sacrifice fly from Trevor Hairgrove, which gave the Kernels a 2-1 lead.

Workman contributed again in the fourth inning after the Whitecaps tied the game at 2 on a Curt Casali solo home run in the top of the inning. With two outs and Frazier Hall on second, Workman singled and Hall hustled home to again retake the lead at 3-2.

West Michigan tied the game at 3 in the sixth inning before Workman's home run in the seventh. Stephen Tromblee earned the win in game one for Cedar Rapids, pushing his record to 2-0. Ryan Crowley started an outstanding no decision, striking out three and allowing just 3 hits in 6 innings. Ryan took the loss for West Michigan, falling to 1-1.

West Michigan won game two 10-6, spurred by 5 runs in the 2nd inning and a three-run home run from Pat Leyland. The Kernels scored their first 4 runs via home runs. Kaleb Cowart hit his second dinger of the season, a three-run shot, in the third inning to score Ryan Jones and Wendell Soto. In the fifth inning, Abel Baker added his first home run of the season to cut the lead down to 10-4.

Cedar Rapids would add the final two runs of the evening on a 6th inning RBI fielder's choice from Workman scoring Hall, and a Soto double scoring Gary Mitchell. Logan Odom pitched two strong innings for the Kernels, holding West Michigan hitless in the final two frames of the second game. Nicholas Avila got the win for the Whitecaps, improving to 1-0, while Daniel Bennett recorded his 5th save. Jairo Diaz falls to 1-2 on the season.

The Kernels conclude the series with West Michigan on Tuesday at 12:05 p.m. Come enjoy the afternoon off of work!
