BayBears Endure Lookouts, 7-6

April 28, 2012 - Southern League (SL) Chattanooga Lookouts

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Lookouts found themselves behind 5-0 in the early innings but kept plugging away before ultimately falling just short in a 7-6 loss to Mobile before a sellout crowd at AT&T Field on Saturday night.

Mobile came swinging right out of the gate. Daniel Kaczrow hit a one-out single to get the bats going. After a Matt Davidson fly out, Brent Clevlen hit a sinking line drive to center that went underneath the glove of a diving Blake Smith. The ball rolled out to the warning track, and Clevlen ended up with an RBI triple. Marc Krauss followed with a triple of his own off of Aaron Miller (1-2) to give Mobile an early 2-0 lead.

Mobile added another run in the second and two more in the third on RBI doubles from Davidson and Clevlen.

Chattanooga got back into the game in the third inning. With two outs already on the board, Rafael Ynoa hit a single to left and advanced to second on a subsequent Chase Anderson (1-0) wild pitch. J.T. Wise came through with a double to give the Lookouts their first run of the game.

The Lookouts added two runs to their total in the bottom of the fourth. Smith began the rally with a single and promptly scored on a subsequent double from Jake Lemmerman. Lemmerman then swiped third, but a fielding error by third baseman Davidson allowed the scrappy shortstop to advance home for another run.

Alfredo Marte hit a two-run shot in the top of the sixth to give the BayBears two important insurance runs.

Faced with a 7-3 deficit, the Lookouts stormed back into the game in the eighth inning. Kyle Russell set the stage with a walk. Pedro Baez then doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Smith then came through with a single to plate both runners. After a throwing error on a pickoff attempt and Griff Erickson walk, Travis Denker singled up the middle to bring home Smith. Down now by just one run, Mobile reliever Evan Marshall was able to induce a ground out from Brian Cavazos-Galvez to kill the rally.

To help keep the game within a run, the Lookouts inserted relief ace Shawn Tolleson into the game. After striking out the first batter, Tolleson's pitching accuracy was tantamount to that of the accuracy of pegomancy. The righty uncharacteristically walked two straight batters; his first walks of the season. Despite the struggles, Tolleson quickly reverted to his normal self and easily retired the next two batters to keep the Lookouts in the game.

The Lookouts' efforts, however, proved to be nothing more than a Sisyphean effort, as Evan Marshall was able to retire the side in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the 7-6 win for the BayBears. Marshall collected his third save in the process.

The Chattanooga Lookouts and Mobile BayBears wrap-up their five-game series at 2:15 P.M., tomorrow. Tickets for this game or any other Lookouts home game can be purchased at the Lookouts Box Office at AT&T Field, online at www.lookouts.com, or by calling (423) 267-4849.
