Inland Empire Adds Infielder and Reliever

April 23, 2012 - California League (CalL) Inland Empire 66ers

San Bernardino, CA - Inland Empire's clubhouse is feeling more crowded with the addition of two new players to the roster. Infielder Brandon Brewer, and reliever Kevin Nabors have been assigned to the 66ers from Extended Spring Training, taking the place of injured players Rolando Gomez and Johnny Holtman who were placed on the 7-day-disabled list.

Brandon Brewer will make his California League debut the first time he takes the field with Inland Empire. Brewer was a 36th round draft choice of the Angels last year and played in 34 games for rookie level Orem. Some famous former 36th round draft picks include current Texas Rangers Pitching Coach Mike Maddux (also the older brother of four-time Cy Young Award winner Greg Maddux) who was taken by the Reds in the 36th round of the 1979 draft, pitcher Jim Abbott who famously made the majors and threw a no-hitter despite being born without a right hand was drafted by the Blue Jays in the 36th round of the 1985 draft but did not sign (the Angels took him in the 1st round, 8th overall in 1988), and 2009 All Star Raul Ibanez was a 36th round draft pick of the Mariners in 1992.

Kevin Nabors is returning to the Inland Empire coming off a strong conclusion to his 2011 season with the 66ers. Nabors did not allow a run in his last seven outings of 2011, spanning 10 2/3 innings over which he had 13 strikeouts and opponents hit just .083.

To make room for the newcomers, Inland Empire has placed Rolando Gomez on the 7-day Disabled List with a fractured right thumb, and reliever Johnny Holtman has also been placed on the disabled list with irritation of his right UCL.

Inland Empire has an eight game, seven day homestand this week at San Manuel Stadium, including Disabilities Awareness night on Saturday the 28th featuring an Angels fleece blanket giveaway sponsored by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. Tickets are on sale now both at the 66ers box office and online at www.66ers.com .
