Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Visalia, CA - The Quakes and Rawhide split a double-header on Sunday, as the Quakes won the first game by a final of 4-3, then got shut out by a score of 2-0 in the series-finale at Recreation Park.
Angel Sanchez earned the win in game one, as the right hander became the first Quakes' starter this year to record a win.
Sanchez (1-1) allowed three runs on five hits over five-plus innings, but needed some help from Steve Smith to preserve the lead. Leading 4-1, Sanchez came out for the bottom of the sixth inning, but gave up back-to-back hits to bring the tying run to the plate.
Smith, making his first appearance of 2012, was greeted by Bobby Borchering with an RBI double, as Chris Owings scored to make it a 4-2 game. An RBI groundout from Raywilly Gomez made it a one-run game, as his grounder to Tyler Henson brought home Jon Griffin. With the tying run at third, Smith then got Carter Bell to fly out to end the threat.
In the last of the seventh, Smith worked around a lead-off walk, striking out Griffin with two on base to earn his first save of the year.
The Quakes took the lead in game one in the third, as Mike Pericht doubled home Leon Landry and Charlie Mirabal, putting them in front to stay at 2-1. Pericht later scored on a sac fly from Jonathan Garcia, making it 3-1. They added another run in the fifth off of Visalia starter Mike Bolsinger (0-2), taking a 4-1 advantage.
Game two starter Zach Lee gave up a run in the first inning, then a home run to Yazy Arbelo in the fourth, as Visalia built a 2-0 lead.
Lee (0-1) battled on the day, allowing just the two runs on four hits over five innings, striking out seven batters, while issuing just one walk.
He received zero run-support though, as the Quakes mustered just three hits in the loss, taking a shutout for already a third time in just 11 games this year.
Visalia starter Ray Hernandez (2-0) was sharp, scattering three hits over five innings. Visalia's bullpen retired all six men they faced, with Bo Schultz working a 1-2-3 seventh for his third save.
After splitting the first four of the trip, the Quakes (5-6) will continue their seven-game road trip in San Jose, sending Chris Reed (0-1) to the mound against Shawn Sanford (2-0) on Monday at 7:00pm.
The Quakes return to The Epicenter on Thursday, April 19th, for another Buffalo Wild Wings Thirsty Thursday. Tickets are available at 909-481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at The Epicenter...Go Quakes!
