Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs have announced four more signings for the 2012 season. Re-signing with the team are pitchers Nick Green and Eduardo Morlan, outfielder Richard Giannotti, and player/coach Jeremy Owens.

Georgia native Nick Green will rejoin the Blue Crabs for his second year with the club. 2011 saw many successful milestones for Green, as he earned the most wins, finished with a 3.96 ERA, the lowest ERA of a starter with 10 or more starts, took home the record for most innings pitched in a season, and was named to the 2012 Liberty Division Atlantic League All Star team along with five fellow Blue Crabs. Green was originally selected by the Atlanta braves in the 32nd round of the 1999 draft. Green played in various Major League organizations for 6 seasons between 2004-2012. He has played for the Atlanta Braves, Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees, Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Toronto Blue Jays.

Originally drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 3rd round of the 2004 draft, Eduardo Morlan will rejoin the Blue Crabs for another season after spending part of last season with Double-A Mississippi of the Atlanta Braves organization. Morlan finished last season with a 1.96 ERA, the lowest ERA by a reliever with 20 or more appearances on the season.

Jeremy Owens has been a mainstay with the Blue Crabs since joining the team in 2008, suiting up every year since. Owens will return to Southern Maryland in 2012 as a player/coach for the third year in a row. Owens was the club's first-ever player/coach in 2010, appearing in 129 games, primarily at centerfield, while simultaneously working as the hitting coach that season. Entering his 15th professional season, Owens was selected by the San Diego Padres in the eighth round of the 1998 draft. He spent time in the Padres, Boston Red Sox, and Tampa Bay Rays farm systems, reaching Triple-A for all three organizations. In 2005, Owens made his Atlantic League debut with the Somerset Patriots.

Entering his fourth year with the Blue Crabs, Richard Giannotti returns as a fan favorite and a versatile switch-hitter. Despite spending majority of the first half of 2011 on the DL, Giannotti stepped up offensively in July when he returned to the lineup hitting .302 in 18 contests. Entering his eighth professional season, Giannotti was originally drafted by the Anaheim Angels in 2004 from the powerhouse University of Miami program. He also has time in the St. Louis Cardinals organization, the Golden League, and previously played in the Can-Am League for the Nashua Pride in 2007, helping lead the Pride to a league title.

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs are a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, and play at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Maryland. The franchise is entering its 5th Anniversary season in the spring of 2012, coming off the team's third consecutive playoff appearance.
