Knoxville Ice Bears News Release
COLUMBUS, GA - The Knoxville Ice Bears forced overtime by scoring with 12 seconds remaining in the game but ultimately fell to the Columbus Cottonmouths 4-3 in overtime.
Prior to the start of the game head coach Mike Craigen predicted that his team would notch two power-play goals in tonight's game in Columbus. Craigen's prediction rang true as Knoxville Ice Bears captain and SPHL scoring leader tallied three goals, one in each period and two on the power-play, to pick up a point and keep the Cottonmouths three points behind the Ice Bears.
The penalty filled game featured a wide range of opportunities for both teams as Knoxville finished by scoring on two of their eight advantages. The Ice Bears also improved their penalty killing efforts by blanking Columbus on six opportunities.
Ice Bears netminder, Nick Niedert, was given his first start as an Ice Bear since the 2004-2005 season and turned away 39 of 43 shots in the overtime loss.
Join the Ice Bears on January 27th at 7:30 pm as Knoxville hosts the Fayetteville FireAntz for the return of Pink in the Rink. The Ice Bears will don special pink jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game - a portion of the proceeds from the jerseys will benefit Knoxville Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
