Normal CornBelters News Release
Normal, IL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, acquired shortstop Robert Brooks, a 2008 draft pick of the Atlanta Braves. The CornBelters will play their first game of the 2012 season at the Corn Crib on Friday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. (CEFCU Opening Night).
Brooks was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 20th round of the 2008 MLB June Amateur Draft. He played the 2008 season with the GCL Braves (Rookie) of the Gulf Coast League. While there, Brooks accumulated 20 RBI, 3 home runs, a .426 on base percentage and a .329 batting average. In 2009, he suffered a season-ending injury and joined the Danville Braves (Rookie) of the Appalachian League for four games in 2010 before being released.
"Independent baseball is made for people like Robert," said Field Manager Chad Parker. "He has been out of independent ball and had a chance to look at things in a different way. I think we can provide him the opportunity to redeem himself and show once again why he was a top prospect in 2008. He still has all the tools to be a great player, hit at the top of the order and play the infield at a high level."
