Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes have announced that Tom Trebelhorn, "Treb", will return to the Volcanoes as Field Manager in 2012. Treb's return marks his fifth season with the Volcanoes, the longest tenure for any Volcanoes Manager since the team's inception in 1997. The Volcanoes won the Northwest League's Western Division Title in 2008 and 2009, and the Northwest League Championship in 2009, under Trebelhorn's leadership.
Trebelhorn, a Portland native and graduate of Cleveland High School and Portland State University, is entering his 43rd year of professional baseball as a player, coach and manager. He managed in the major leagues with the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs, was named American League Manager of the Year in 1987 by Baseball America and Sports Illustrated. He then was a major league coach for eleven years with the Baltimore Orioles. "Treb has a wealth of knowledge to share, has had great success, and knows what it takes to advance to the next level. The Volcanoes are thrilled to have Treb back in a Volcanoes uniform," noted Volcanoes team President, Jerry Walker.
Jerry Cram will return as the Volcanoes pitching coach. Cram, who coached with the Volcanoes in 2011, also served as the Volcanoes pitching coach from 2004-2008. Under his guidance the Volcanoes won three consecutive Northwest League Western Division Championships (2005-2007), and two consecutive Northwest League Championships (2006-2007). In 2009 and 2010, Cram was pitching coach for the San Jose Giants, assisting the team to win back-to-back California League Championships. 2012 will mark Cram's 45th year in professional baseball.
Keizer native Ricky Ward will return as a Volcanoes Coach. Ward joined the Volcanoes during the 2005 season, and has been here each year since. Ricky was raised in Portland, graduating from Roosevelt High School. He played shortstop at Chemeketa Community College in 1989 and 1990 prior to signing with the Giants. He played for the Giants in Everett, Washington, Clinton, Iowa and San Jose, California. Ward then signed with Minnesota in 1994, and joined their AA affiliate in Nashville until a knee injury ended his career. He began coaching at the University of Portland in 2002, and was on the Western Oregon University baseball staff from 2003-2005.
The Volcanoes will open their 2012 campaign on Thursday, June 14, with a pre-season game versus the College All-Stars. The club begins Northwest League play on Friday, June 15 at home versus the Boise Hawks. Ticket packages are currently on sale by calling the Volcanoes at 503-390-2225.
