Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-Fifty years after the founding of the Waterloo Black Hawks in 1962, the organization will honor three of the franchise's early MVPs before the first game of 2012 by distributing their special-issue trading cards Friday.
The cards, sponsored by iWireless, feature forward Paul Johnson and defensemen Bud McRae and Bill Dobbyn:
- Johnson was a two-time Olympian, including a gold medal winner for the United States during the 1960 games. He joined the Black Hawks fulltime and was a scoring star in the senior-level USHL beginning in 1965.
- McRae was a member of all five Hawks USHL championship teams from the 1963-1964 season through 1967-1968. In addition to his abilities on the blue line, he also served as the club's head coach during four of those years.
- Dobbyn was a world-class defenseman who contributed to four league titles. He remains active in the game today, serving as the Hawks' director of off-ice officials.
The first 1,000 fans in attendance for Friday's 7:05 PM matchup against the Indiana Ice will receive the commemorative cards. The entire 2011-2012 Black Hawks player card set, presented by iWireless, is distributed in increments before each Friday game of the regular season. Tickets for this Friday's matchup and all other games this season are available from the Black Hawks Box Office by calling (319) 291-7680 or online from waterlooblackhawks.com.
