Loman's 3-Run Homer In Eighth Drops Generals

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. (AUGUST 7, 2011) - The Barons' Seth Loman hit a two out, 3-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie and Birmingham beat Jackson Sunday at Regions Park, 5-2. The Barons lead the series two games to one.

General's starter Jimmy Gillheeney gave up two runs on three hits in the first inning, but settled down to allow just one hit over his final five innings. Gillheeney pitched six innings in the no decision, walking three and striking out three. Moises Hernandez (3-2) allowed the three run home run and took the loss for Jackson. Hernandez's younger brother Felix also lost for Seattle today. Nate Jones (2-3) got the win for Birmingham, pitching two scoreless relief innings and Anthony Carter earned the save in the ninth.

Chih-Hsien Chiang was 2-for-4, raising his average in seven Jackson games to .333 and Rich Poythress was also 2-for-4, upping his average to .265. Greg Paiml was the only Baron with 2+ hits going 2-for-4 with a double.

The Barons went up 2-0 in the first inning Sunday that lasted 33 minutes. Each team stranded the bases loaded. Birmingham scored their runs on an RBI double by Jose Martinez and RBI single from Christian Marrero.

The Generals tied the game after scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Carlos Triunfel plated a run in the fifth with a ground out and Francisco Martinez brought in the tying run in the sixth, reaching on a fielder's choice.

Loman smashed his three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth, with two outs off of Moises Hernandez. Anthony Carter closed the door in the top of the ninth and Birmingham won 5-2.

The Generals continue their five-game series on Monday night at Regions Park in Birmingham, AL against the Birmingham Barons. Game time is set for 7:05 pm. RHP Steven Hensley (2-6, 5.59) makes the start for the Generals against RHP Terry Doyle (3-4, 3.39) for Birmingham.
