Wisconsin Rapids, WI - Eight players from the Northwoods League squared off in the 2011 Marshfield Clinic Northwoods League Home Run Derby on Sunday, July 17th. The participant field included four players from the North Division and four from the South Division. It was quite a historic event, as over 70 home runs flew over the fence before a champion was crowned.

Northwoods League Leader Shaun Cooper (University of Utah) of the Mankato MoonDogs came away victorious in the final round, but not before a tight battle with Wisconsin Rapids fan favorite, Kyle Peterson.

Cooper blasted 21 home runs in the first two rounds combined, propelling him into the final round with Peterson. Peterson put on a fabulous display in the first round, hitting 16 home runs over the Witter Field fence. Peterson's 11 home runs in the second round gave him 27 combined home runs heading into the final round.

Home run totals in the first two rounds were combined for each participant and the top two home run hitters faced off in the finals. With the combined home run totals wiped away for the final round, the two sluggers started at zero to determine the champion.

Cooper blasted 12 home runs in the final round, besting Peterson's mark of 10 to claim the 2011 Marshfield Clinic NWL Home Run Derby crown. Overall, Peterson bested Cooper in total home runs, hitting 37 total to Cooper's 33.

Cooper entered the All-Star break with 12 home runs. A junior from Utah, Cooper put together an impressive spring season in 2011, as he batted .348 with seven home runs and a .603 slugging percentage.

Peterson entered the All-Star break with 9 home runs, good for second in the Northwoods League. The Eastern Michigan product put on a display for the hometown crowd as he compiled 16 home runs in the first round alone, hitting 37 home runs total throughout the three rounds combined. His 37 home runs in the Home Run Derby set a Northwoods League record and the total is more than Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees hit in the 2011 Major League Home Run Derby earlier this month. Peterson was selected in the 50th Round of the 2008 Major League Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays.

On Monday, July 18th the Northwoods League North Division All-Stars will take on the All-Stars from the South Division in the League's 17th Annual Marshfield Clinic Northwoods League All-Star Game beginning at 7:05pm. The All-Star Game will also be broadcast live on www.northwoodsleague.tv. For tickets to all events call the Rafters ticket office at 715-424-5400 or purchase online at www.raftersbaseball.com.
