Four-Run Sixth Lifts Gnats Past 'Jackets 6-5

SAVANNAH, GA -A four run bottom of the sixth inning lifted the Savannah Sand Gnats past the Augusta GreenJackets by a score of 6-5 Saturday night in front of 3,533 fans at Historic Grayson Stadium. The first-half champion Gnats are 2-1 in the second half and 41-31 overall.

Down 5-2 entering the sixth, the Gnats used two singles and a walk to load the bases. 2B Luis Nieves and CF Rafael Fernandez drew walks to force in runs to pull the Gnats within a run at 5-4. SS Wilfredo Tovar then singled through the left side to drive home two runs to give the Gnats a 6-5 lead. Tovar was 2-for-5, one of three Gnats' batters with multiple hits. Albert Cordero, who began the sixth inning rally with a single, was 2-for-4. Sam Honeck was 2-3 with a double, a walk and two runs scored.

The Gnats took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second innings.

The GreenJackets (1-2/32-41) answered back with five unanswered runs in the third through fifth innings against starter Ryan Fraser to build a 5-2 lead. The big blow was a two-run home run in the fifth by 1B Josh Mazzola who also homered Friday. Fraser gave up five runs on six hits and four walks in his five innings.

The Gnats bullpen of Todd Weldon and Ronny Morla combined on four scoreless innings yielding just one hit. Weldon earned the win to improve to 2-1 while Morla, making his first Savannah appearance since May 7, earned the save, his fifth with the Gnats. Morla was promoted to advanced-a St. Lucie on May 9 and was returned to Savannah on June 17.

The Gnats and GreenJackets finish their four-game Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 2:05 pm. The Gnats will send RHP Taylor Whitenton (3-1, 3.34) to the mound against LHP Mike Kickham (1-4, 4.31). Gates open at 1pm.
