Duncan Siemens just finished his second season in the Western Hockey League with the Saskatoon Blades. The 17-year-old Sherwood Park, AB, product scored five and 43 points to help the Blades finish in first place overall during the 2010-11 regular season with a franchise record 115 points.
A two-way, physical defender who can skate very well, Siemens possesses all the elements that make for a strong NHL defensive prospect. A 6' 3", 200-lb frame and a competitive, hard-nosed attitude make him a physical force on the ice. His physical presence, particularly his ability to dole out punishing checks, his skating and mobility, and his intelligence in the defensive zone make Siemens incredibly tough for opposing forwards to play against. As strong and imposing as he is in his own zone, Siemens also boasts good offensive instincts, puck moving ability and skill to make him an effective player in the attacking zone.
"He's a very committed young man, he works extremely hard at all aspects of his game, and he's very coachable," said Blades' head coach and general manager Lorne Molleken. "In the two years he has been with us, he's showed solid character and plenty of leadership qualities.
"When he plays with that edge, he's a very difficult player to play against," said Molleken. "He likes to hit, he'll punish players in front of the net and in the corners...he's a good all-around player, he played on our top power play unit all year with Stefan Elliott, and I think those elements of his game will come out at the next level if given the opportunity."
Siemens suited up for Team Canada at the 2010 Memorial for Ivan Hlinka tournament, helping the team win the Gold medal, and also played for Team Pacific at the 2009 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
Did you know...Siemens models his game after Hall-of-Fame defenseman Scott Stevens, a player also known for delivering punishing checks and his intimidating presence on the ice.
