Pump Jacks End Skid with Win Over Brazos Valley

June 9, 2011 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL) - East Texas PumpJacks News Release

With a team-high 11 current and former players drafted in the past two days, excitement in Pump Jacks nation was at an all-time high. Or so we thought.

The Pump Jacks added fuel to the fire Thursday night with a 5-1 win over Brazos Valley, snapping a three game skid.

James Guillen took the hill in his first start on the season and made it count. The University of Southern California ace tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing only three hits and one walk. He struck out six Bombers, the most of any Jacks starter this season.

After being selected in the 50th round today by the Kansas City Royals, Kash Kalkowski showed fans that his draft selection might not be spot on. He led the Jacks offense going 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored, his strongest showing so far in the young season.

Seth Granger scored three runs going 2-for-3 at the plate. One of the newest Jacks, John Twichell went 2-for-4 with an RBI of his own. Hunter Dozier, Tyler Girouard and Jake Pinchback each knocked in a run to round out the Pump Jacks offense.

Kalkowski reached in the second on a hit by pitch and was knocked in on a single by Dozier to put the Jacks on the board first. Granger and Kalkowski each reached base on singles in the fourth with Twichell knocking in Granger to give the Jack the 2-0 edge.

And that is when Guillen hit his stride.

Posting no strikeouts in the first four innings, Guillen shut down the Bombers offense in his final three innings on the mound. After retiring the side in the fifth with his first two strikeouts, Guillen pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth with two more strikeouts. He sent the Bombers down in order in the seventh, striking out two and fielding a grounder up the middle on his own.

Granger scored his second run of the game on a Kalkowski double in the sixth. Kash was then picked off at home with a bullet from Bomber right fielder Greg Olson to end the inning with the Jacks up 3-0.

Dozier reached in the seventh on a lead off walk and was plated by a sacrifice fly by Pinchback. Bickerstaff, Granger and Twichell each hit posted singles in the eighth with Girouard reaching on a four-pitch walk, plating Granger for his third run of the game.

James Hudelson came on in the eighth in relief of Guillen and put the Bombers down in a 1-2-3 inning. He came out in ninth and retired the first two batters before giving up three straight singles resulting in the Bombers only run of the game. Hudelson then struck out Stevyn Rivera to earn his first save of the summer and give the Jacks the win.

The Jacks square off again Thursday with the Bombers to complete the two game series in Brazos Valley.

The team returns home June 10 for the season's first Fireworks Friday presented by Patterson Kilgore and KLTV News. East Texas wraps up the two game series with the new Acadiana Cane Cutters on Saturday, June 11, with Everybody Wins.
