Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

Waldorf, MDâ€"The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs pulled to within a half-game of first place in the Liberty Division standings with a 4-0 victory over the Long Island Ducks on Tuesday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium. The shutout was the team's second of the season as starter Jason Waddell (1-1) fired six scoreless innings to get the win. It was also Southern Maryland's first win of the season over Long Island after the Ducks swept the Blue Crabs at Long Island last week.

All of the scoring came in the sixth inning as the Blue Crabs scored four runs on seven hits. Left fielder Casey Benjamin led off the frame with a walk off of Ducks starter Mike Parisi and then went to third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run single to right by shortstop Yunesky Sanchez. With runners at the corners and one out, third baseman Travis Garcia hit a broken-bat grounder to counterpart Matt Padgett of the Ducks who threw to first base to get Garcia, while Benjamin scored from third and Sanchez moved to second to give Southern Maryland a 1-0 lead.

With two out and Sanchez at second, catcher Christian Lopez drew another walk from Parisi, which set the stage for a crucial two-run triple by first baseman Ryan Mulhern to give the Blue Crabs a 3-0 edge. That would chase Parisi from the game and bring in reliever Ehren Wassermann, who promptly gave up an RBI single to right fielder Ben Harrison to give the Blue Crabs the final edge of 4-0.

The story of the game was Waddell who allowed no runs on two hits in six innings or work while walking two and striking out five. Since allowing three first-inning runs to Long Island on May 11, the southpaw has held the Ducks to no runs on three hits in 10 innings of work.

Parisi (2-1) pitched well for Long Island, but was saddled with the loss after allowing all four runs on three hits in 5.2 innings. He also walked four and struck out six as Long Island's offense could only muster three hits for the game.

Leading the way offensively for the Blue Crabs was Harrison who went 2-3 with two singles, an RBI, a stolen base, and a walk.

The Blue Crabs take on the Ducks in game two of their three-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. from Regency Furniture Stadium. Right-hander Nick Green (2-1, 7.91 ERA) will go for Southern Maryland against righty Joselo Diaz (1-0, 1.71 ERA) of Long Island. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the box office, at www.somdbluecrabs.com, or by calling (301) 638-9788.
