Sky Sox Defeat 51s 6-5 For Fifth Straight Victory

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox defeated the Las Vegas 51s 6-5 in front of 1,757 fans on a soggy night at Security Service Field.

In a closely contested game, the Sox overcame deficits of 3-1 and 5-3 to win their fifth straight game and move over .500 for the first time this season.

For the fifth straight game, the Sky Sox got on the board with a run in the first inning. Eric Young Jr. and Alfredo Amezaga both walked to start the inning but it took a two-out single off the bat of Ian Stewart to drive home Young after two quick outs put the Sox in danger of losing a scoring opportunity.

Las Vegas would tie the game up in the second after David Cooper led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Criag Stansberry. The 51s lead off man reached again in the third when Scott Podsednick walked and Vegas took a 2-1 lead when he later scored on a throwing error by shortstop Chris Nelson. In the fifth, for the third time in the game, Las Vegas got the lead off man on with a DeWayne Wise single and he later scored, this time on a sacrific fly by Cooper to push the lead to 3-1.

The Sox would rally in the sixth for two runs to tie it at 3-3. With the bases loaded and two outs, Mike Jacobs delivered a two-run single to right on an 0-2 pitch to drive home Amezaga and Josh Fields.

The 51s regained the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh as Young Jr. threw wildly following a single by David Cooper, allowing Eric Thames to score and Jonathan Diaz followed later in the inning with the 51s third sacrifice fly of the game.

The Sox would rally and take the lead for good with three runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh. Two sacrifice flies from Young Jr. and Josh Fields and an RBI double by Charlie Blackmon gave the Sox a 6-5 lead.

Eric Stults (1-1, 5.84) picked up the win in relief of starter Billy Buckner. Andrew Johnston worked around trouble in the ninth, striking out Scott Podsednick with a runner on third, to record his third save of the year.

Josh Roenicke (1-2, 10.61) took the loss for the 51s allowing three runs on three hits in an innings of work.

With the win, the Sox capture their second series victory in a row and improve to 10-9 on the year while the 51s fall to 9-10.

The Sox will go for the series sweep tomorrow night as Josh Muecke (0-2, 5.00) faces off against Brett Cecil (NR). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM MT
