Mammoth drop tight one to Swarm

DENVER -The Colorado Mammoth lost to the Minnesota Swarm 11-10 in front of 13,957 fans on HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center Friday night.

The loss drops Colorado's season record to 1-8 while the division-rival Swarm improves to 5-4 on the season. Mammoth forward Alex Gajic led all scorers with a four-goal, two-assist outing. Mammoth goalie Chris Levis continued to hold strong between the pipes with 31 saves on the night including multiple one-on-one saves.

Minnesota capitalized in the first quarter on an early power play with a goal by forward Aaron Wilson 3:07 into the game. The power play came as a result of a fight between Mammoth captain John Gallant and former Mammoth forward Jamie Shewchuk, now of the Swarm. Minnesota transition player Andrew Watt added two more goals for the Swarm including a short-handed fast-break goal. Mammoth forward Jamie Floris got the Mammoth on the board with a goal with 2:14 remaining in the quarter to bring the score to 3-1 going into the second quarter.

Colorado came out in the second quarter with a quick goal by forward Alex Gajic just 31 seconds into the quarter. Minnesota answered with two goals of its own before Gajic could find the net again for the second time in the quarter. Minnesota's Shewchuk answered tallying his second of the quarter with 2:30 remaining in the half bringing the score to 6-3.

The third quarter proved to be productive offensively for the Mammoth. Colorado put up five goals in the frame highlighted by an outside laser by transition player Jed Prossner, and a behind-the-back trick shot by John Grant Jr. who tucked the ball in as he was being shoved to the ground. In addition, Gajic completed a hat trick while the Swarm was only able to muster three goals of its own in the third. Colorado trailed by only one going into the final frame with a score of 9-8.

The fourth quarter turned out to be a low-scoring one as both teams tightened up defensively. It wasn't all defense however, as Colorado forward Mike McLellan tied the game with a quick-stick goal from Mammoth forward Dan Carey at the 8:33 mark. Minnesota regained the lead after being awarded a controversial penalty shot following an illegal substitution penalty on the Mammoth, a problem that has plagued Colorado this season. Colorado managed to send the game to overtime as Gajic added his fourth of the night with just 38 seconds remaining in the game.

Minnesota ended the game after winning the faceoff then setting its offense up for an outside shot and goal just 33 seconds into the overtime period.

Colorado will have three weeks to rest up before its next game on March 26 as the Mammoth hosts the Boston Blazers on HealthONE Field at 7pm. The game will be broadcast live on Altitude Sports and Entertainment.
