Louisiana IceGators News Release
LAFAYETTE, LA - The Louisiana IceGators returned to the Dome for their second to last home game of the 2010-11 season to take on the Mississippi Surge. The Surge entered the game at the top of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) standings. They continued their dominance over the league winning 6-1 in the Dome.
Mississippi opened the first period out shooting the 'Gators 7-1 in the first 13 minutes. The seventh shot on goal was by Jack Wolgemuth (MIS) and it snuck past Mike Brown (LOU), IceGators goalkeeper. Mississippi continued their dominance in the opening period as they outshot the IceGators 13-5.
The second period continued to be a struggle for the IceGators. The 'Gators were outshot 23-4 in the period. In fact, Louisiana had two shots on goal in the first 2:30 of the period. Mississippi then had nine unanswered shots on goal. Two of those shots put the Surge up 3-0. Michael Richard (MIS) scored with 11:27 left and Chris Chambers (MIS) added a goal less than a minute later. The Surge added a fourth goal of the game with 7:36 left in the period. Rob Campbell (MIS) scored his 7th goal of the season and first goal of the game.
The third period began with the IceGators in a 4-0 hole. Mississippi extended the lead with 15:15 remaining in the game when Campbell scored his second goal of the game. Four minutes later Brent Clarke (MIS) scored the sixth goal of the night for the Surge. The 13th shot on goal in the game for the IceGators occurred at the 5:47 mark as Shawn McNeil (LOU) finally got the IceGators on the board but the 'Gators were unable to cut into the 6-1 lead anymore.
"This was a good old fashion beating," answered and upset IceGators' Head Coach Kevin Kaminski. "After playing such a good game last night we, we played an equally bad game tonight. It is important for us to put this behind us and move on. We can still cause some problems for the other teams in the league."
The 'Gators conclude the home season on Thursday night against the Cottonmouths of Columbus. The team will be wearing special Mardi Gras jerseys that will be auctioned off during and after the game. Do not miss your last chance to see the IceGators.
