LAFAYETTE, LA - The IceGators will be Bringing Christmas to the Dome. Louisiana plays two games at home before returning to the road for two games. Pensacola travels to the Dome on Wednesday, December 23 and the Mississippi Surge on Saturday, December 25. The 'Gators will also have a special guest at the home game on December 23. The team will then go on the road for a game on Sunday, December 26 at Mississippi.
When the 'Gators hit the ice on Wednesday, against the rivaled Pensacola Ice Flyers, one of the most famous people in the world will be in attendance, Santa Claus. He will be taking time out of his busy schedule and will be at the game to take pictures with 'Gator fans. In addition to seeing Santa, fans will have a chance to skate with the 'Gators during a post-game skate. The Pentecostals of Lafayette Choir will also help bring in the Christmas spirit, singing Christmas carols throughout the night.
Pensacola is currently 13-7 and are tied for second in the Southern Professional Hockey League with 26 points. The Ice Flyers lead the season series 4-2. Each of the previous match-ups between the IceGators and the Ice Flyers each game has been decided by one goal and one of the games decided in overtime. The Ice Flyers have scored 22 goals against the IceGators, and 13 of those goals have been scored by three players; Matt Whitehead (5), Chris Wilson (4), and Brett Parker (4).
The night of Christmas Day the 'Gators will also give gifts to the children as a part of "Youth Jersey Night". The first 500 children will receive a complimentary IceGators Youth Jersey.
On Christmas Day, the 'Gators will take on the other team tied for second in the SPHL with 26 points, the Mississippi Surge (13-6), at the Dome. The two teams will then travel to Mississippi and face-off on the ice again on December 26. The Surge lead the season series 4-1. The only win for the IceGators came in overtime on October 29. Last time the two teams met was on December 9 in Biloxi. The Surge and 'Gators were tied at 0-0 going into the third period. With about eight minutes left in the game, Matt Zultek scored the game-winning goal.
"This is an important weekend," answered IceGators' Head Coach Dave MacIsaac when asked about the next three games. "We need to win both the games this week. In order to win the league we are going to have to beat the best teams in the league and that begins tomorrow. Our guys are going to need to step up and play a solid game for all three periods."
During each of these games the IceGators leaders will be looked to lead the way for the 'Gators. Trevor Karasiewicz has not scored a point in the last two games, which is his longest pointless streak for the season. Even though he has not scored a point in the last two games, Karasiewicz still leads the SPHL with 34 points. Beau McLaughlin is also looking to join Karasiewicz with 30 points on the season. He is currently four points shy of 30 with 26.
The Louisiana IceGators will then return to the Dome for two games this upcoming week on Wednesday, December 22 against the Pensacola Ice Flyers.
