Frederick Keys News Release
Frederick, MD - Last night in Arlington, Texas, three former Frederick Keys won the World Series wearing a different kind of black and orange - that of the San Francisco Giants. IF Mike Fontenot, RHP Chris Ray and C Eli Whiteside all won rings with the Giants, who defeated the Texas Rangers four games to one to win its first championship since they played at the Polo Ground in New York City in 1954.
Fontenot, was drafted by the Orioles in the first round of the 2001 draft and made his professional debut as a Frederick Key in 2002. In 2005, Fontenot was ripe to make his major league debut when prior to the season he was traded to Chicago (NL) in the deal that brought Sammy Sosa to Baltimore. A mid-season acquisition by San Francisco in 2010, Fontenot hit .282 in 28 games with the Giants and played in eight postseason games in San Francisco's title run.
Ray was not a part of the World Series roster but will win a ring in his first season in the Giants organization. Ray went 3-0 with a 4.13 ERA in 28 appearances with San Francisco this year. The Orioles 3rd round pick in the 2003 draft, Ray was a starting pitcher on the Keys 2004 club going 6-3 with a 3.80 ERA in 14 Carolina League starts. Interestingly enough, Ray began this year as a Texas Rangers reliever before heading to the Giants near the season's mid-way point.
Whiteside, the Orioles sixth round pick in 2001, played 80 games with the Keys in 2002. He made his big league debut with the Orioles in 2005 before heading to the Giants organization in 2008. This season, Whiteside played in 56 games for San Francisco batting .238 with four home runs.
For all three players, it is their first World Series won.
