Maine Celtics News Release
PORTLAND, ME - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Quirk Chevrolet, today announced that Boston Celtics legend Tommy Heinsohn will join the team on Saturday, September 25, during the team's annual "Pick-A-Seat Day". The event is sponsored by Gobeil's Furniture Galleries of Gray. There is no charge for the event, and Heinsohn will be available to sign autographs and pose for pictures. Heinsohn holds eight championship rings as a player and one as a coach with the Celtics.
In 1956, Heinsohn was chosen as the Boston Celtics 'regional', or 'territorial', draft pick, and in just his first season, played in an NBA All-Star Game, was named the NBA Rookie of the Year and won his first championship ring. Part of a Celtics squad that won eight NBA titles in nine years, only teammates Bill Russell and Sam Jones won more championship rings during their playing careers than Heinsohn. He was named to six All-Star teams and scored 12,194 career points. Heinsohn's number 15 was retired by the Celtics in 1965. He was named the Celtics head coach in 1969 and accumulated a career coaching record of 427-263, including Coach of the Year honors in 1972-73 and an NBA title in 1976. Named to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1986, Heinsohn in recent years has worked as a color commentator for Celtics broadcasts.
"It is very rare that you get the opportunity to meet an NBA legend," said Red Claws President and General Manager Jon Jennings. "We are honored that he would come to Maine to help us launch the second season of the Maine Red Claws and give our fans this opportunity."
Heinsohn will appear as part of the Red Claws "Pick-A-Seat Day." The annual event is an opportunity for Red Claws' fans to check out the Portland Expo, including the parquet floor, as well as for new and prospective season ticket holders to check out the view from their seats. The event will be held from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM, with Tommy Heinsohn making an appearance from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM. Gobeil's Furniture Galleries will raffle off a recliner during the event.
Red Claws season and group tickets for the 2010-11 season are now on sale and may be purchased online at www.maineredclaws.com, by phone at 207-210-6655 or in person at the Red Claws offices located at 413 Congress Street in Portland. The team's offices are open Monday-Friday 8:30 - 6:00 PM. Individual tickets will go on sale in mid-October. Last season, the Red Claws became the first NBA Development League team to sell out every single home game with 24 straight sellouts at the Portland Expo. The 2010-11 season will tip off on Friday, November 19.
