Washington Wild Things News Release

Avon, Ohio - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, fell to the Lake Erie Crushers, 3-2, in the last meeting of the season between the two teams. Wayne Bond's two-out single off Eryk McConnell in the bottom of the eighth scored Dom Duggan, lifting the Crushers to another close win over the Wild Things at All Pro Freight Stadium.

The Wild Things entered the game with the Crushers looking to snap a four-game losing streak. Despite scoring just three runs in their past two games at Lake Erie, the Wild Things lost each of the games by only one run. Predictably, the string of close, low-scoring games between the two teams continued tonight.

Washington starter Jeff Sonnenberg had another quality outing, allowing two runs on just four hits while striking out four, maintaining the team's current stretch of strong starting pitching. Earlier this season against Lake Erie, Sonnenberg became the first pitcher in Wild Things history to face the minimum, allowing only two hits and no walks in a 3-0 shutout on July 29. However, on this night, Lake Erie starter Alberto Rolon was just as effective as the Washington righty, scattering 8 hits and striking out 6. Despite strong efforts from the starters, neither figured in the decision, as the game was deadlocked at 2-2 when each exited after seven innings.

The Wild Things were not without opportunities to break the game open. Despite having the leadoff man on base in two of the first four innings, Washington could not take advantage, leaving both runners stranded at third. With the game tied in the seventh, Jared Dyer led off with a single. After Dyer stole his first base of the season, Chris Sidick, a night after playing all nine positions, singled, moving Dyer to third. Washington threatened to take the lead, but Rolon induced Parker to fly out to shallow right field, and then forced Matos to ground into an inning-ending double play on his 101st pitch of the night.

In the bottom of the fourth, Lake Erie scored the first two runs of the game. Following a one out triple by Wayne Bond, Andrew Davis singled him home. After Davis advanced to second by way of a passed ball, Lee Huggins doubled, scoring a second run for the Crushers.

Washington tied the game in the top of the sixth. After Michael Parker and Wilson Matos reached base with one out, Jon Kourie doubled into the gap, slicing the lead in half. Following a John Delaney walk, Mark McGonigle laced an RBI single up the middle, plating Matos. However, they could not do further damage in the inning, leaving the bases loaded after tying the game.

The loss dropped Washington to 38-54, finishing their season series against Lake Erie at 4-8.

The Wild Things conclude their season with a three game series at Traverse City, beginning Friday at 7:05 p.m. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:55 p.m. on WJPA 95.3 FM. Season tickets for 2011, the Wild Things' 10th season, are on sale now. Call the box office at 866-456-WILD for details.
