Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes moved closer to clinching a playoff berth, hammering the High Desert Mavericks, 8-1, in the opening game of the three-game series on Tuesday night at The Epicenter.
With Rancho Cucamonga's win and Lancaster's loss at home to Lake Elsinore, the Quakes are now five games up on Lancaster and one up over High Desert with just six remaining in the regular season. A loss tomorrow night for Lancaster would eliminate them from second-half title contention, giving the Quakes a trip to the playoffs for the second time in as many years.
Gabe Jacobo hit a grand slam and drove in five runs, while starting pitcher Garrett Richards enjoyed his best home-start, as the Quakes won for the ninth time in their last 11 games.
Richards (4-1) allowed just one run over a season-high seven innings, allowing four hits, while striking out eight. Kyle Seager's RBI single off of Richards, put the Mavs up 1-0 in the third.
That lead didn't last long though, as High Desert starter Maikel Cleto loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batter. After getting Dillon Baird to pop up for the second out, Cleto's first pitch to Jacobo was destroyed to left-center field, for his 20th homer of the year and second grand slam against the Mavs, putting the Quakes ahead at 4-1.
Jacobo struck again in the fifth, singling home Alberto Rosario to cap a five-RBI night, making it 5-1. Jacobo is now just one RBI away from the m 100 on the season.
The Quakes capitalized on more walks and poor Mavericks' defense in the sixth, scoring three times to take an 8-1 lead over Cleto (4-9). Baird had the only RBI of the inning, as his sac fly capped the scoring at 8-1.
New Quakes' reliever Matt Oye pitched two innings of scoreless relief to finish it up, striking out four hitters in his debut.
The Quakes (35-29) look to make it two straight over their division-rivals on Wednesday, sending Orangel Arenas (7-3) to the mound against High Desert's Jonathan Hesketh (3-4) at 7:05pm.
Wednesday night is Quakes' Alumni Magnet Giveaway, as 1,000 fans will receive a free Quakes' Magnet as they enter the ballpark. Game time is 7:05pm and gates open at 6:05pm. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com.
