Mavs Rally in Home Finale

August 31, 2010 - California League (CalL1) - High Desert Mavericks News Release

The home schedule this season has often times been frustrating, with more losses than wins. In the final home game of the regular season, the Mavs sent the fans off with a good one, fighting back a couple of times and defeating Lake Elsinore 9-7 Monday night.

The Mavs shot out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Johermyn Chavez provided a two-out RBI triple.

The lead with short lived, though. In the top of the second, the Storm had a runner at first with two outs before six straight men reached base.

Bo Davis tied the game with an RBI double, and Cole Figueroa followed with a two-run single. Vince Belnome then added an RBI single to make it 4-1. Nate Reed finally got Robert Lara to fly out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

The Mavs tied the game in their next at bat. Luis Nunez collected an RBI single, and Daniel Carroll knocked an RBI double. Edilio Colina's RBI groundout tied the game at 4-4.

Davis put the Storm in front once again in the third with a two- run double. Belnome led off the fourth with a solo homer, his seventh in 11 games at Mavericks Stadium, as the Storm regained a three-run lead.

However, that was the last time Lake Elsinore scored, as the bullpen turned in six strong innings, keeping the Mavs close.

The Mavs pulled within two in the fourth on Nunez's second RBI single. Even though they had runners at second and third with one out, they couldn't score and remained down 7-5.

The game turned in the seventh. Denny Almonte hit a two-run homer to tie the game at 7-7. With two outs, Carroll provided the go-ahead RBI single to put the Mavs in the lead.

The Storm stranded the tying run at second in the eighth, and the Mavs were able to add an insurance run in the bottom of the inning.

Jake Shaffer's RBI single put the Mavs up 9-7. Kyle Seager scored on the play and set a new team record with his 121st run of the season.

Colina committed a throwing error on the first play of the ninth, but Stephen Penney didn't let it shake him. He retired the next three hitters to finish the game and earn his fifth save of the year.

Penney capped a great night by the bullpen, allowing one run over six innings, including five straight scoreless to end the game. Cheyne Hann (4-5) took the win, pitching an inning with a strikeout.

Storm reliever Eric Gonzalez lost for the second time in the series. Gonzalez (6-5) gave up the lead, allowing three runs over 1.1 innings.

The Mavs finished at home with a 31-39 record and will look to wrap up a playoff spot when they play their final seven games on the road. They'll begin a three-game series in Rancho Cucamonga Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage starts at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
