Joel Carreno Sets New Single Season Strikeout Record for Dunedin
August 29, 2010 - Florida State League (FSL) Dunedin Blue Jays
Dunedin, FL - Dunedin Blue Jays right-hander Joel Carreno broke the Dunedin Blue Jays single season strikeout record on Sunday evening, recording his 162nd punchout in the first inning of the D-Jays' 4-2 win over the Tampa Yankees.Needing two strikeouts to break the record set by Nate Cromwell in 1992, Carreno struck out Tampa leadoff man Ray Kruml to tie the record and then got Jose Pirela swinging on the very next at-bat to break the record and put himself into the D-Jays record book.
Carreno has had a breakout season in 2010, setting career highs in wins (9), games started (24), innings pitched (134.2) and of course the strikeout category, where he now has 169 after a nine strikeout performance on Sunday in only five innings. He ranks second in the FSL behind leader Matt Moore of Charlotte, and his total is 5th best in all of Minor League Baseball.
The 23-year-old from San Cristobal, Dominican Republic already had the Florida State League season-high for strikeouts in a single game, when he had 15 against the Lakeland Flying Tigers on July 11. Ironically, it was also the last time that he lost a decision in one of his starts.
If the Dunedin rotation stays as it is for now, his next scheduled start would be on Saturday against Tampa in the final series of the regular season. If not, he will most likely pitch for the D-Jays during the FSL North Division playoffs, which begins on Tuesday, September 7.
