Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WOODBRIDGE, VA (AUGUST 22, 2010) - Tyson Corley tagged out Jose Lozada at home plate and the Dash breathed a sigh of relief as Winston-Salem escaped Pfitzner Stadium with a 9-8 victory on Sunday afternoon. A wild ballgame ended when Lozada, representing the tying run, tried to score from third base on a pitch to the back stop, only to be thrown out by Jason Bour to end the contest.
The Dash (27-26, 70-53) entered the fourth inning trailing 1-0 against Cuban defector Yunesky Maya, but used a big offensive frame to build a lead. Winston scored five times in the inning, which resembled the team's eight-run eighth inning on Friday night.
Jon Gilmore walked and then scored on Seth Loman's RBI double. After Ozzie Lewis singled, Drew Garcia brought home Loman on a base hit to left field to give the Dash a 2-1 lead. A walk to Jason Bour loaded the bases for Kyle Shelton, who singled to right field to bring in another run. Two more came home on an RBI single by Kenny Williams, Jr. and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jose Martinez.
Winston-Salem added to its haul in the fifth when Loman led off the inning with his 21st home run of the season. It was Loman's second home run in as many games and it gave the Dash a 6-1 lead.
Potomac (30-24, 61-63) scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to get back into the ballgame. Starter Terry Doyle lasted five innings for Winston and was replaced by Jake Rasner, who loaded the bases with nobody out before striking out Lozada. Jamar Walton and Francisco Soriano each drove in runs with singles to slice the Dash's lead to three and re-load the bases. Rasner got out of the inning when Chris Curran lined out to Loman, who tagged first base for a double play.
The Dash picked up three more runs in the top of the seventh. Jason Bour smacked an RBI double to center off Clayton Dill, who was then replaced by A.J. Morris. Shelton walked, and then Morris surrendered a two-run triple to Greg Paiml, boosting Winston's lead to 9-3.
The tenacious P-Nats proved to be difficult to keep at bay, however, as Potomac scored four times in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Sean Rooney doubled and scored on a Walton base hit. After Soriano walked, both he and Walton scored when Curran bounced a ball off Loman's glove at first. Curran reached third base on the error and scored when Sean Nicol singled off new Winston reliever Tyson Corley to make it 9-7 Dash.
After Winston-Salem went scoreless in the top of the ninth, the Nationals made one last push in the bottom of the inning. After Corley stuck out the leadoff batter, Rooney doubled and Lozada singled to put men on the corners. Walton picked up his third RBI of the day with a base hit to centerfield and moved Lozada, representing the tying run, to second base. Soriano flied out to deep right field, advancing Lozada to third base with two outs.
Curran then came to the plate as the last chance for Potomac to tie or take the lead. After getting ahead 0-2, Corley's next pitch sailed to the left of Bour. Lozada broke for home, but the ball hit so hard off the back stop that it quickly came back to the catcher. Bour threw to Corley, who placed the tag on Lozada to dramatically end the game.
The win clinched the series victory for the Dash, which won the season series 12 games to eight. Terry Doyle (6-8) got the win with five innings of one-run, four-hit ball. Maya (0-1) took the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits in four-plus innings.
Winston-Salem continues its road trip with a four-game series in Lynchburg on Monday. RHP Stephen Sauer (7-9, 4.98) opposes RHP Josh Ravin (1-0, 0.00) in a 7:05 p.m. start from City Stadium. The audio broadcast begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
