Green Bay Gamblers News Release
Green Bay (August 9, 2010) - After posting a stunning 84-27-9 record and winning two Anderson Cups and one Clark Cup with the Green Bay Gamblers in two seasons, Jon Cooper is leaving the Gamblers to become the head coach of the American Hockey League's (AHL) Norfolk Admirals - the top minor league team for the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning. Cooper is the first coach to jump from the USHL to a head coaching job in the AHL.
"What Jon did here in just two seasons was amazing," said Gamblers President Brendan Bruss. "Clearly his success with the Gamblers has afforded him this incredible opportunity in the AHL and we wish him nothing but the best."
With training camp starting in about a month, the Gamblers will look to fill their head coaching job as quickly as possible.
"We will begin the search immediately and look for someone to continue the winning philosophy and style that Jon instilled here," added Bruss. "I believe this is the best junior hockey league coaching job in the U.S. and our goal will always be to win championships."
During his two seasons with the Gamblers, Jon Cooper had a .738 winning percentage and had an overall record, including playoffs, of 97-33-9. He was named USHL General Manager of the Year in both 2009 & 2010 and USHL Coach of the Year in 2010. Cooper also led the Gamblers to team records of 45 wins and 95 points this past season.
