Salem Red Sox News Release
Frederick, MD (August 4, 2010)- Michael Lee tossed his second consecutive quality start, the Red Sox took their first lead with four runs in the fifth, and Salem went on to take the finale of the three-game series from the Frederick Keys with a 7-3 win on Wednesday night at Harry Grove Stadium. The win secured the first series victory against the Keys since July 21-23 of last season and put Salem 17 games above .500 for the first time this year.
Lee, the reigning Carolina League Pitcher of the Week, proved he was worthy of the honor by going six strong innings, allowing just two runs on three hits, while tying a season-high with five strikeouts. The righthander surrendered a solo home run to Miguel Abreu with one out in the second, but retired 13 of the final 16 he faced from the second until the sixth. Lee picked up his ninth win of the year, becoming just the fifth pitcher to do so in the Carolina League.
Despite falling behind for the first time in the series, the Sox scored five straight to overtake the Keys in the fourth and fifth innings. Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, Alex Hassan reached on an error by the first baseman Buck Britton, stole second base, and advanced to third on a wild pitch by Zach Clark. Dan Butler came through with a two-out single to right to tie the game at one.
An inning later, the Sox exploded for their second four-run inning of the series to jump out to a 5-1 lead. After Ryan Dent struck out, Jon Hee, Mitch Dening and Peter Hissey all singled to load the bases for Oscar Tejeda, who walked on four pitches to give the Sox a 2-1 lead. Hassan followed up with a sac fly that put Salem up by two. The big hit came off the bat of Tim Federowicz, who smashed a two-run double past the diving center fielder Xavier Avery to push the Sox advantage to four at 5-1.
The Keys were able to manufacture a one-out run in the sixth, as Xavier Avery walked with one out and stole second, before coming home on an RBI single by Kyle Hudson to draw Frederick back within three.
Salem responded in the seventh as two straight singles and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with nobody out for Federowicz. The Sox catcher delivered by grounding a ball to the second baseman LJ Hoes, who couldn't handle the high chopper, allowing Tejeda to score from third to give Salem its four-run advantage back. Dan Butler grounded into a double play and Hedman popped out to end the threat.
Frederick attempted a comeback in the bottom half of the seventh, but were only able to scratch across one run on a groundout from Bobby Stevens to make it 6-3. Reliever Cesar Cabral was able to work out of the jam by snaring a liner right back at him for the final out of the frame.
The Sox added an extra insurance run in the ninth as Tejeda rapped a single past the drawn in infield to score Hissey from third and put Salem up 7-3.
Federowicz drove in three runs for the seventh time this year, including two on his 30th double of the season. The Sox catcher is just the third Carolina Leaguer to reach the 30-double mark this season. Tejeda added two RBI along with two hits, while Butler extended his hitting streak to five with a 2-for-3 showing, driving in his eighth run of the year in a Salem uniform.
After the brief three-game road trip, the Red Sox return home for their longest homestand of the year, beginning Thursday night with the first of four against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Fresh off his transfer from Triple-A Pawtucket, Mark Holliman returns to Salem for his third start for the Salem Sox. He'll take on Wilmington's Bryan Paukovitz, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM in the Roanoke Valley.
