BURLINGTON, VT --- Vermont Lake Monster pitchers issued a team record-tying 14 walks and uncorked nine wild pitches as the Lowell Spinners took adavantage of the wildness for an 11-5 New York-Penn League victory on Saturday night at historic Centennial Field.
With the game tied 3-3 in the sixth inning, Lowell would score five runs over the next two innings on just one base hit. Lake Monster reliever Aaron Barrett (0-1) walked five of the first six batters he faced in the sixth inning to force home two runs and give the Spinners a 5-3 lead. Lowell added another run on a Miles Head sacrifice fly.
Then in the seventh reliever Kevin Cahill issued back-to-back one-out walks, threw one of his four wild pitches and then allowed a two-run single to Jayson Hernandez for an 8-3 Lowell lead. Vermont got a couple of runs back in the eighth on a Chad Mozingo RBI triple and Blake Kelso sacrifice fly, but Seth Schwindenhammer hit a two-run homer and Head an RBI single in the ninth inning off Shane Zellers.
The victory snapped an 11-game losing streak for Lowell (8-28), while the 14 walks by Vermont pitchers were the most since issuing 14 at Elmira on July 19, 1995. It was also the most walks ever allowed by a Lake Monsters pitching staff at Centennial Field, breaking the record of 12 set twice.
Mozingo was 3-for-4 with two runs and two triples, the seventh player in Vermont history with two triples in a single-game. Jason Martinson had an RBI triple in the first inning as the first three Lake Monsters reached on a Mozingo triple, Kelso double and Martinson triple as Vermont took a 3-2 lead after one.
Kolbrin Vitek was 2-for-5 with two runs, a triple and two RBI for Lowell, while Felix Sanchez was 2-for-3 with two runs. Stephen Fox (3-1) allowed two runs on five hits over four innings of relief to pick up the victory.
David Freitas had a double to leadoff the seventh inning to extend his team-record hitting streak to 20 straight games, the longest hitting streak in the New York-Penn League since Luis Soto of Lowell had a 20-game hitting streak during the 2005 season.
Vermont (23-12) continues the homestand on Sunday as they begin a brief two-game series with the Tri-City ValleyCats beginning at 1:05 pm.
