Cougars "Steal" Game Two

July 15, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars stole eight bases on Thursday night, running their way to a 5-0 victory over the South Bend Silver Hawks. South Bend was shut out for the eighth time this season and has now lost three straight games to fall to 8-12 in the second half.

South Bend had a threat in the first inning with three hits, a stolen base, and a hit batter. However, a caught stealing in the mix prevented the Silver Hawks from scoring despite having four different base runners, and that set the tone for the rest of the night.

The Silver Hawks did not dent the dish the entire night, stranding 10 runners while striking out 13 times. Justin Marks (WP, 3-10) struck out 10 in six innings as the starter, earning just his third victory of the season.

All the while, Kane County was running at every chance they got, stealing eight bases on the night. The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the first when Tyrease House singled, stole second, and scored on a RBI single by Myrio Richard.

The Cougars expanded the lead against Mike Belfiore (LP, 1-7) and the Silver Hawks in the second, with a double by Chris Affinito, a single from House, and a wild pitch to make it 2-0.

Belfiore was pulled after two innings, and it's unclear as to whether it was due to injury or a high pitch count. He was making his first appearance after being on the disabled list since July 1st.

The Cougars added a run in the third against Chris Odegaard (ND) and two runs in the eighth on Randy Rodriguez (ND). Rashun Dixon had a sacrifice fly for the RBI in the third while Mike Gilmartin drove in two with a single in the eighth.

As a pitching highlight, Kevin Munson (ND) made his professional debut for South Bend and retired the side in order in the bottom of the sixth. Munson, a fourth round selection from James Madison, struck out two of the three batters he faced.

Bobby Borchering and Matt Davidson extended hitting streaks with singles in the first inning. Borchering's is now a personal best 10 games, while Davidson's 12 game streak is the second longest on the team this season.

The Silver Hawks and Cougars wrap up the three game series on Friday night at 8:00 PM Eastern Time from Elfstrom Stadium. RHP Andrew Wolcott (0-1, 6.17 ERA) will make his third start of the season for South Bend against Kane County RHP Kenny Smalley (1st appearance of 2010 with the Cougars). Pregame coverage begins at 7:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
