Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Goaltender Jay Williams, who has been competing for a slot with the Waterloo Black Hawks in 2010-2011, will have the chance to sharpen his game next month as a member of the U.S. Under-18 Select Team.
The McLean, Virginia native and 20 other top U.S. players born in 1993 will participate in the 2010 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, staged annually in Breclav, Czech Republic and Piestany, Slovakia. USA Hockey announced the Under-18 Select Team roster Wednesday after holding a week-long player development camp in Rochester, New York.
The Black Hawks selected Williams in the first round of the 2009 USHL Futures Draft with the third overall pick. He appeared with the Neponset Valley River Rats midget hockey program last season while being protected on the Black Hawks' affiliate list. In June, Williams was at camp in Waterloo and was one of four goalies selected by the Black Hawks' coaching staff to play in the All-Star games at the conclusion of try-outs. Williams has previous international experience after appearing for the U.S. Under-17 Select Team at the 2009 Five Nations Tournament.
The Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament has been held every year since 1991, with the United States winning the event once (2003). Games begin August 9th, with the U.S. slated to face the host Czech team, Finland, and Russia in preliminary round play. Canada, Slovakia, Sweden, and Switzerland also have entries in the competition.
