Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has signed forward Casey Haines ("HAYNZ"). Last season, Haines (5'9/191) (23), scored twelve goals, assisted on nineteen others (thirty-one points) and picked up forty-nine penalty minutes in forty games during his senior year for the Ferris State University Bulldogs where he was the team's second leading scorer.
In his senior season, Haines, who hails from Indiana, Pennsylvania, scored a team leading five game winning goals for the Bulldogs, who finished third in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association with a 21-13-6 record and were ranked eighth in the nation entering the CCHA playoffs. In those playoffs, FSU won their quarterfinal match-up over the University of Nebraska-Omaha when Haines racked up the GWG twenty-three seconds into overtime. Haines was also a primary component of Ferris State's penalty killing success last year, as the Bulldogs boasted the top PK in the nation, killing penalties at an 88.4% clip. Haines, who was a three-time representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as well as active in the local Big Brothers program while in school, was recently selected as the co-recipient of FSU's Willie Bouyer Leadership Award, the athletic department's most prestigious honor bestowed upon an athlete who exhibits strong inspirational leadership and dedication to fellow student-athletes. Haines, who received the team's Most Improved Player Award as a junior at FSU, registered sixty points (25g-35a) in 142 total collegiate games with the Bulldogs.
The Royals host the team's tenth anniversary home opener on Saturday, October 23, 2010 (7:05 pm), when the Elmira Jackals visit the Sovereign Center. Season tickets for the Royals' 2009-10 season are currently available. To become a part of Royals hockey, call 610-898-PUCK or log onto www.royalshockey.com .
