BURLINGTON, VT --- The Vermont Lake Monsters shutout the Tri-City ValleyCats for the second straight night with a 4-0 New York-Penn League victory at historic Centennial Field Tuesday night to give Vermont its best-ever start to a season with a 9-3 record through 12 games.

Starter Chad Jenkins (1-1) allowed just one hit with one walk and seven strikeouts over his five innings of work for the win. Jenkins, who was touched for five runs on six hits in just 3 1/3 innings at Tri-City on June 24th, allowed just a one-out walk in the first inning and a leadoff single in the fourth.

Wilson Eusebio tossed three scoreless innings of relief, while Neil Holland gave up a leadoff single in the ninth before getting a double play and popout to end the game. Vermont pitchers have now thrown 21 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to a three-run homer allowed in the sixth inning on Sunday at Connecticut.

The Lake Monsters would get all four of their runs early with one in the first and three in the second inning. Hendry Jimenez walked to leadoff the bottom of the first, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a David Freitas RBI single. It was just the second first-inning run of the season for Vermont in 12 games (Lake Monster pitchers have not allowed a first-inning run all year).

Cole Leonida led off the second with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error before scoring on a Marcus Jones RBI double down the leftfield line. Jones would score later in the inning on a Jimenez RBI groundout and Justin Miller scored on a Jason Martinson RBI single to center for the 4-0 lead.

Martinson, Freitas, Jones and Stephen King each had two hits for the Lake Monsters, while Wilton Infante and Ben Orloff accounted for the ValleyCats two hits. Bobby Doran (0-2) allowed four runs on six hits in four innings to take the loss for Tri-City (4-8).

The victory was the third straight for the Lake Monsters, who pass the 8-4 starts of the 1996, 2000 and 2001 Vermont Expos for the best start in the team's 17-year history. The win also keeps the Lake Monsters 2 games atop the Stedler Division over Connecticut (7-5).

Vermont will go for the three-game sweep of Tri-City on Wednesday night when Matt Swynenberg is scheduled to start for the Lake Monsters in the 7:05 pm contest at Centennial.
