Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

A late rally would not be enough for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, as the Pawtucket Red Sox pulled out a 7-6 victory Wednesday night at PNC Field.

Pawtucket got on the board first when Lars Anderson hit a solo homerun, his fifth of the year, over the wall in left-center in the top of the second inning off Yankees starter Dustin Moseley.

The Yankees responded quickly with a two-run blast form Rene Rivera off the batter's eye in center to put the team up 2-1. It was Rivera's second homerun of the year and his first of three hits on the night.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre would increase the lead to two runs the following inning, scoring a run without getting a hit.

Greg Golson led off the inning with a walk and then stole second base. Justin Christian followed by reaching on an error by Pawtucket shortstop Gil Velazquez.

Reid Gorecki then moved the runners up a base on a sacrifice bunt, setting Eduardo Nunez up for a RBI groundout to second that put the team up 3-1.

The lead was short-lived, however, as the Red Sox would touch up Moseley for four runs in the fourth inning.

With two runners on and one out in the inning, Lars Anderson doubled to drive in a run and cut the score to 3-2. A run scoring groundout by Aaron Bates then tied the game at 3-3 before Gustavo Molina hit a two-run homerun to put Pawtucket up 5-3.

The Red Sox would add another run in the fifth inning, ultimately ending Moseley's night.

Moseley went five innings of six run ball, giving up six hits while walking three and striking out three.

"I left some balls up, out over the plate, and when I did they didn't miss them," Moseley said.

Moseley, who had been on a pitching hot streak, allowed more runs in the fourth inning (four) than he had in his previous two starts (three), and as many runs in five innings as he had in his previous 20 2/3 innings.

"You just try to keep your team in the ballgame. You go out there with the same attitude, understanding that baseball is what it is," Moseley said. "You're going to have good nights, you're going to have rough ones and you come to the park the next day, after a good one or a rough one, and you get back to work."

The Yankees starter would not be on the hook for the loss, however, as the team rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Eric Bruntlett started the inning with a base hit-his first in 23 plate appearances with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre-and advanced to second base on another booted ball by Velazquez that allowed Christian to reach first base.

Gorecki followed with a run scoring double to make it 6-4 Pawtucket, and a RBI-single by Nunez cut the lead to one.

After Jorge Vazquez struck out for the second out in the inning, Rivera lined a single to center to score Gorecki and tie the game at 6-6.

With the two errors by Velazquez, three of the Yankees' six runs on the night would be unearned.

"If we don't catch a break on that potential double play-we scored three unearned runs after that," Yankees manager Dave Miley said. "We've talked about it enough. We've got to do a better job, plain and simple. The word is consistency."

Pawtucket scored the final run of the game in the seventh inning, and would hold on for the victory despite a late Yankees' push. With two outs in the ninth inning, Gorecki singled and stole second base, but was stranded there as Nunez struck out to end the game.

The teams meet in the final match of the four-game series Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Adam Mills will get the start for Pawtucket, while Tim Redding will take the ball for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
