Salem RidgeYaks News Release

Salem, VA - After scoring three runs in each of the last two contests, the Salem Sox broke out in an offensive fury on Saturday night, dominating the Kinston Indians in a 12-0 rout in front of 4,311 at Lewis-Gale Field. The Sox scored four each in the first and second innings off of a helpless Kinston starter, Marty Popham, to extend their winning streak to five games. As the Red Sox recorded the final out in Salem, word broke that Blue Rock third baseman Jamie Romak delivered a walkoff single in Wilmington, bringing down Winston-Salem and keeping Salem still alive in the playoff chase. With one game remaining in the half, the Red Sox sit just one game behind the Dash, keeping Sunday's action very meaningful.

The entire Salem batting lineup came to the plate in the first inning as the Sox tallied four runs on five hits, including two two-out doubles, one by Jorge Padron and the other by Alex Hassan. Up 2-0, Hassan's two-bagger with the bases juiced doubled the lead to four-zip. Eight more Sox came to the plate in the second, as this time Tim Federowicz delivered a two-out, two-run double to open the Salem lead up to 8-0.

The Sox added three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to finish off their dominance. The 12th and final run was scored by Oscar Tejeda, who led Salem with four hits in five plate appearances and scored two runs in the contest. The Sox pounded out 18 hits on the night, seven of which were doubles. Eight of the nine starters attributed a hit on the night, with seven of the Sox recording multi-hit games.

Ryan Lavarnway, Federowicz and Hassan added multi-RBI games, with Federowicz driving in three to go along with his two doubles, bringing his season total to 23. Lavarnway's two RBI added to his Carolina League-leading total, which now stands at 54 on the year.

Lost in the early offensive explosion was the performance of the Salem pitching staff. Despite walking a season-high five batters, starter Caleb Clay didn't allow a hit in his four innings on the mound. Lance McClain earned the win to improve to 2-2 with three scoreless frames out of the pen, and Will Latimer finished it off by holding the Tribe without a run in the eighth and ninth.

The Sox have a chance to tie the Dash atop the Southern Division, providing that Winston loses its' 1:35 PM contest with Wilmington and Salem completes the sweep against the K-Tribe at 4:05 PM Sunday. Stolmy Pimentel will finish off the first half for the Sox against Kinston's Joe Gardner. If the scenarios fall in Salem's favor, the first meeting of the second half between Winston and the Sox, scheduled for June 27 at BB&T Ballpark, would decide who earns the playoff berth.
