THE HILLCATS: Lynchburg lost 2-1 to Kinston on Tuesday night in the series opener of their three-game series at City Stadium...The Hillcats are now 2-3 on their seven-game homestand which concludes tonight with the final two games of a three-game series with Kinston and the sixth and seventh contests of the homestand...

VS. KINSTON: Lynchburg is 5-3 against Kinston this season with two series victories prior to their loss Tuesday night...The Hillcats went 10-10 versus the Indians in 2009 and were 6-4 at Grainger Stadium...After starting 8-4 against the K-Tribe, the Cats lost six of the final eight games between the two...Lynchburg is 153-150 all-time against the Indians and 85-66 in the Hill City...

LET'S PLAY TWO! After the rain out last night, Lynchburg will play their fifth doubleheader of the season tonight...Thus far this season the Hillcats are 3-5 in double dips...They have been swept once and have split the split the other three...The Cats are 1-3 in postponed games (the second game of the twin bill)...Last season Lynchburg had seven doubleheaders...They swept one, were swept once, and split the other five...

HOLDING THEM IN CHECK: Tuesday night Kinston scored two runs in their 2-1 victory over Lynchburg...The Hillcats pitching staff has allowed just ten runs in their last six games played (1.7 runs per game) and have not allowed more than three runs in any of those games...In the series against Potomac the Cats had a stretch of 21 straight scoreless innings...The Cats had posted two shutouts in 61 games before blanking the P-Nats in back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday night...Over the last six games Lynchburg has lowered their ERA from 4.11 to 3.88...

MISSING IN ACTION: Through five games on their current seven-game homestand the Hillcats are averaging just 2.4 runs per game (12 runs in five games played)...In their three losses Lynchburg has plated just three combined runs...

CLEAN-UP AFTER YOURSELF: The Hillcats bullpen inherited two runners Tuesday night and neither one scored...In the first two months of the season the Cats pen allowed 23-of-49 (47%) of inherited runners to score...Since then in the month of June, Lynchburg's relievers have allowed just 1-of-15 (7%) inherited runners to score to lower their total number to 38% (24-for-64)...

LOST THAT SPARK: Tuesday night Lynchburg lost their fourth straight series opener...After starting the season 8-1 in series openers, the Hillcats are just 4-7 since...

ROAD TO RECOVERY: RHP Edinson Volquez makes his second rehab appearance with Lynchburg tonight after he made his 2010 debut last Saturday night with the Hillcats and tossed three scoreless innings...After allowing the first two batters of the game to get base hits, he set down the next nine in order before his night came to a close...In 2008 he was the Reds' lone representative in the National League All-Star game...He was 17-6 with a 3.21 ERA with 206 strikeouts in 196 innings...The righty last threw June 1, 2009 for the Reds against St. Louis...He missed the rest of last season and had reconstructive elbow surgery August 3...Volquez was 4-2, with a 4.35 ERA in nine starts with Cincinnati last year...On April 20, Volquez was suspended for 50 games for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program...

TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHERS: LHP T.J. McFarland is scheduled to start game one for Kinston and he was selected by the Indians in the fourth round of the 2007 draft out of high school in Palos Hills, Illinois...The lefty made his professional debut with the GCL Indians in 2008 and went 3-4 with a 5.07 ERA in 12 games (10 starts)...Last season he moved up to full season Low-A Lake County and posted a 9-4 mark with a 3.58 ERA with one save in 25 games (23 starts) with the Captains...This season with Advanced-A Kinston he has a 7-1 record with a 2.16 ERA...McFarland is leading the league in ERA, tied for first in wins, fourth in WHIP (1.05) and fifth in batting average against (.225)...He has been named to the 2010 Carolina League Mid-Season All-Star team...The southpaw has tossed against Lynchburg once and he picked up the win as he tossed five innings of scoreless relief at City Stadium on May 6th...RHP Joey Mahalic is slated to start game two for the K-Tribe...He was selected by the Indians in the 2nd round of the 2007 draft out of high school in Portland, Oregon...He made his professional debut with the GCL Indians that same year and went 2-0 with a 4.88 ERA in seven games (four starts)...In 2008 he threw for full season Low-A Lake County and had a 7-6 mark with a 4.19 ERA in 20 games (18 starts)...He returned to the Captains last season and had an 0-1 record with a 1.91 ERA in six starts before earning the call-up to Kinston...He made just one start with the Indians and took the loss as he allowed eight earned runs in three and 2/3 innings and missed the rest of the season with a right elbow strain...This season he has returned to action with the K-Tribe and has a 1-1 mark with a 3.92 ERA in 11 games (six starts)...The right-hander has been much better as a starter this season, posting a 3.26 ERA while in the rotation, as opposed to his 6.23 ERA when throwing in relief...Mahalic has made two relief appearances against Lynchburg this season and he has a 4.50 ERA (three earned runs in six innings) without a decision...
