Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

San Jose, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes survived a 12-walk performance by their pitching staff on Monday afternoon, holding on for a 5-3 win over the San Jose Giants at Municipal Stadium in San Jose.

Brandon Belt's two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning off Steven Geltz tightened things up at 5-3, but Kevin Nabors was called out of the Quakes' bullpen to get the final out. Nabors would fan Giants' second baseman Charlie Culberson to end the game, giving Nabors his first save of the year.

11 of the first 12 walks issued by the Quakes' pitching staff never touched home plate. It wasn't until Steven Geltz's lead-off walk to Aaron Lowenstein to open the bottom of the ninth, that the Quakes were actually burned by their season-high total.

Quakes' starter Tyler Chatwood (6-2) issued seven walks over five innings, but surrendered just one run on two hits. Belt was the only Giant to get to Chatwood, as his fourth homer of the year, a solo shot in the fourth inning, accounted for San Jose's lone run, coming into the ninth.

The Quakes gave Chatwood the early lead, scoring twice before he took the hill. Gabe Jacobo knocked in a run with an RBI triple, then scored on Luis Jimenez's RBI single, putting the Quakes in front at 2-0 against Giants' starter Oliver Odle (5-1).

Tyson Auer's RBI hit in the fifth put the Quakes up 3-1, as he singled home Rian Kiniry.

Angel Castillo gave the Quakes some breathing room in the eighth, ripping a two-out double to plate Jimenez and Eric Oliver, putting the Quakes up 5-1.

Reliever Jose Perez was solid over the sixth and seventh innings, but walked the bases loaded in the eighth. With no outs, Geltz was called into the game and retired all three batters he faced, without allowing a single run to come home, as the Quakes took their 5-1 advantage to the ninth.

With the victory, the Quakes are back to six games over the .500 mark at 29-23, but still remain six games out, behind first-place Lake Elsinore in the South Division, with just 18 games to play in the first half.

Ryan Chaffee (3-2) will take on Kyle Nicholson (3-3), as the Quakes look to make it a 6-1 road trip. The final game of the three-game set in San Jose, starts at 7:00pm on Tuesday night.

The Quakes will return from the current seven-game road trip on Thursday, June 3rd, as they open a four-game series against Lancaster. Saturday, June 5th is Studio Dental Fireworks Night at The Epicenter, as everyone will enjoy a post-game Fireworks Celebration thanks to Studio Dental and KOLA 99.9. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at The Epicenter very soon. Go Quakes!
