Brandon, MB - The Canadian Hockey League has announced the top individual award winners and tournament All-Stars following the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup. The winners were selected by NHL Central Scouting.
Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy (Most Valuable Player) and Ed Chynoweth Trophy (Top Scorer) - Taylor Hall, Windsor Spitfires
Taylor Hall of the Windsor Spitfires becomes the first player in MasterCard Memorial Cup history to win the MVP award twice, having captured the Stafford Smythe Trophy at the 2009 event in Rimouski, QC. Hall also led the tournament in scoring with nine points in four games scoring a tournament-high five goals while adding four assists. The 19-year-old from Kingston, ON, scored a goal and two assists in the Championship Final to secure the award. He is eligible for the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
George Parsons Trophy (Most Sportsmanlike Player) - Toni Rajala, Brandon Wheat Kings
Toni Rajala led the Brandon Wheat Kings in MasterCard Memorial Cup scoring with two goals and five assists for seven points in five games without recording any penalties. The 19-year-old from Parkano, Finland, was named first star of the game on Sunday scoring two goals in a 4-0 win over the Moncton Wildcats.
Hap Emms Memorial Trophy (Outstanding Goaltender) - Martin Jones, Calgary Hitmen
Martin Jones of the Calgary Hitmen led the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup with 147 saves in four games posting a goals-against-average of 3.71 and save percentage of .907. The 20-year-old from North Vancouver, BC, and Los Angeles Kings prospect, was named second star of the 5-4 overtime loss in Friday's semi-final contest with 43 saves.
Defencemen Travis Hamonic of the Brandon Wheat Kings and Cam Fowler of the Windsor Spitfires were each named to the tournament All-Star team. Hamonic, a 19-year-old from St. Malo, MB, and New York Islanders prospect led the Wheat Kings defence corps in scoring with three points in five games, while Fowler led all defencemen with six points scoring two goals and four assists in four games. Fowler, an 18-year-old from Farmington Hills, Michigan, is eligible for the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
Jimmy Bubnick of the Calgary Hitmen was also named to the All-Star team at forward along with the Wheat Kings' Matt Calvert. Bubnick, a 19-year-old from Saskatoon, SK, and Atlanta Thrashers prospect finished tied for second in tournament scoring with eight points in four games scoring three goals and five assists.
Calvert, a 20-year-old from Brandon, MB, and Columbus Blue Jackets prospect wrapped up his CHL career on home ice finishing the tournament with four points in five games scoring three goals and one assist. Hall and Jones were also both named tournament All-Stars.
