St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (May 14, 2010) - The St. Paul Saints trailed the Wichita Wingnuts 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, but scored six unanswered runs to come back and defeat the Wichita Wingnuts 7-5 on Friday night in front of 4,129 at Midway Stadium.
The Saints scored the eventual winning run in the eighth on a bizarre play. With the score tied at five Gerard Haran led off the inning with a single to right. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hector Estrella. Steve Mays followed with a single to right. Haran took a hard turn at third, but third base coach Lamarr Rogers put up the stop sign and Haran held until he saw the throw from right fielder Ryan Patterson skip away from catcher Jeff Christy. Haran charged to the plate as pitcher Will Morgan scampered after the ball and threw home. Haran collided with Christy knocking the ball loose, but Haran never touched the plate. First baseman Stephen Pearson grabbed the ball, lunged after Haran, as he jumped over Christy, and touched home as Pearson touched him with his forearm and not the baseball allowing the run to score and giving the Saints a 6-5 lead. Mays advanced to second on the play and scored on Josh Alley's double to left. Alley finished the night 4-5 with a double, RBI and two runs scored.
The comeback for the Saints began with a two run fifth inning as they trailed 5-1. With one out Coby Smith doubled and advanced to third on a single by Alley. Kevin Millar followed with a walk to load the bases and Jason Cooper's single scored Smith to make it 5-2. A fielder's choice ground out by Ole Sheldon scored Alley which made it 5-3.
In the seventh the Saints tied it when Alley led off with a single and with two outs Ole Sheldon crushed a pitch over the batters eye in center field, a two-run shot, his second of the season.
The Saints bullpen once again did the job. Reliever Jacob Schmidt was perfect hurling 3.1 innings while striking out one to earn the victory. All-Star closer Hunter Davis notched his first save of the season by pitching a perfect ninth.
The same two teams meet Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Jason Godin (NR) to the mound against Wingnuts RHP Gabe Medina (NR). The game can be seen on KSTC-TV, Channel 45 and heard on Relevant Radio 1330. The Saints try to prove Minnesota is the real Cougartown as the first 2,500 fans receive a free cougar bobblehead.
