Peoria Chiefs News Release

Burlington, IA - The Peoria Chiefs snapped five-game losing streak with a 7-1 win over the Burlington Bees Thursday night as Trey McNutt fired six shutout innings and Matt Cerda drove in four. The win moves the Chiefs to 20-15 on the year as they start a season-long 11-game roadtrip and move into a tie for second place.

With the game scoreless into the fourth the Chiefs broke through against Bees starter Matt Mitchell. Matt Cerda singled with one out and moved to second on a base hit by Greg Rohan. A fielders' choice put runners on the corners with two down, and DJ Fitzgerald gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead with an infield single off the glove of Deivy Batista at second base.

The Chiefs added to their lead in the fifth thanks to a Bees mistake. Francisco Guzman walked with one down and moved to second on a passed ball. With two down Logan Watkins struck out on a pitch in the dirt, but instead of throwing to first to end the inning, catcher Will Myers threw late to third as Guzman stole the bases. Watkins reached third on the dropped third strike and Cerda converted with a RBI single to center for a 2-0 lead.

With McNutt cruising against the Bees bats the Chiefs added to the lead in the sixth. Justin Bour led off the inning with his second homer of the season out to right field to put the Chiefs up 3-0.

The Chiefs broke the game open in the top of the ninth against Burlington reliever Michael Lehmann. Mario Mercedes singled with one out and was forced at second on a grounder by Guzman. Hak-Ju Lee executed a perfect hit-and-run single to right to move Guzman to third with two outs. Watkins made it 4-0 with a single to center and Cerda capped the night with a three-run homer to right-center. The blast, Cerda's second of the season, gave the designated hitter a career-high four RBI.

Burlington put their lone run on the board with two outs in the bottom of the ninth against Jonathan Nagel who made his first career relief appearance. Juan Graterol singled to right with two outs to score Joey Lewis for the final margin.

McNutt (2-0) tossed six shutout innings with five hits allowed. He struck out seven and walked two, never allowing a runner past second base. Nagel picked up his first career save after allowing one run on two hits over three innings while striking out three. Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Trey McNutt (RHP)- McNutt limited the Bees to five hits, four singles, over six shutout innings to move to 2-0 on the season.
