Sky Sox Improve to 6-5 with Two Wins on Sunday

April 18, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Sky Sox took both ends of today's doubleheader at Security Service Field, improving to 6-5 while the Las Vegas 51s fell to 7-4.

Making up for yesterday's postponement, the first match kicked off at 1:05 pm. Las Vegas drew first blood in the second inning on Jesus Merchan's RBI double to left, going ahead 1-0. A Christian Colonel line out ended the inning in the next at-bat, but the damage was done.

The Sky Sox rallied back in the fourth inning as singles by Matt Miller and Mike Paulk set up a Cole Garner three-run home run to left field, his first of the season and the team's third. The score 3-1 and starter Alan Johnson done for the day, the Sky Sox put the game in the hands of their bullpen.

The pitching cruised from there, as Damian Moss, Matt Reynolds, and Juan Rincon combined to throw three scoreless innings, letting up just one hit while recording three strikeouts. Rincon notched his fifth save of the season while Reynolds was credited with the win.

Following a brief intermission, the two teams retook the field for the second contest as Sox' starter Jhoulys Chacin squared off against former Colorado Springs closer Steven Register.

The Sox got the scoring going in the second, as eight batters combined to plate four runs on three doubles, a single, and a walk. Jay Payton, Warren Schaeffer, and Chris Frey all had RBI doubles for the Sky Sox while Payton scored on a fielding error by 51s third baseman Christian Colonel - his first of three on the day.

Colorado Springs continued the siege in the third and fourth innings. After plating a run in the third, Register was replaced by lefty Zach Jackson to begin the fourth. With the score 5-0 in favor of the Sky Sox, the ugly inning began with back-to-back throwing errors by Colonel that allowed the first two batters to reach. With runners on second and third, Chris Frey drove in the Sky Sox sixth run on a sacrifice fly to center. A wild pitch two batters later allowed Eric Young, Jr. to score, making the tally 7-0.

On the other side of the ball, Chacin cruised through his outing, pulled with one out in the seventh having allowed only four hits and two walks. His changeup was particularly sharp today, helping the starter to send down five batters by way of the K.

With back-to-back wins, the Sky Sox have pushed their record back over .500 at 6-5, while the 51s drop to 7-4.

Tomorrow's game is scheduled for a 6:05 PM first pitch, as Sky Sox' right hander Samuel Deduno (1-1, 2.00) takes the mound against 51s' lefty Brad Mills (1-0, 0.79).
