Pitcher's Duel Sides with Biscuits as BayBears Drop for the First Time

Mobile BayBears News Release

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Unable to find a hit at the right time, the BayBears suffered their first defeat and first shutout at the hands of the Montgomery Biscuits on Saturday night at Riverwalk Stadium, 1-0.

Jake McGee returning from Tommy John Surgery was sharp and unaffected by his past elbow injury as he kept the BayBears (2-1) off balance through five scoreless innings while surrendering just three hits.

One of the BayBear knocks against McGee came in the first when Evan Frey bunted his way on. Jake Wald was walked but a double steal attempt wiped Wald out at second. Frey was stranded on third to end the frame.

Matt Torra was equally as effective for the BayBears as he also threw five scoreless innings, scattering six hits and fanning four. Torra worked around a one-out double in the fourth by Cody Strait by inducing groundouts from Cody Cipriano and Drew Anderson.

In the sixth, Kyler Newby (0-1) recorded outs against the first two men he faced in his season debut before a two-out single by Anderson. It looked harmless until John Matulia laced a ball down the right-field line, resulting in a triple which brought Anderson home for what became the game's only run.

Justin Garcia (1-1) shaking off a terrible outing on Friday tossed two perfect innings before Paul Phillips (S, 1) kept the BayBears down in the final two frames. Phillips was on the ropes in the ninth when Konrad Schmidt singled and stole second. He was left at third, however, when Taylor Harbin lined out to center.

The BayBears send right-hander Bryan Shaw to the hill on Sunday afternoon in Montgomery as they take on the Biscuits in game four of their five-game set at 2:05. They return to Mobile for the home opener at Hank Aaron Stadium on Wednesday night at 7:05 when they open the Hank Aaron Childhood Home & Museum. Baseball Hall of Famers Hank Aaron, Ozzie Smith, Rickey Henderson, Bob Feller, Bruce Sutter and Willie Mays will be in attendance among many other baseball dignitaries. For tickets, which start at $5 for kids and $7 for adults, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
