St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (March 17, 2010) - The St. Paul Saints pitching staff hopes they won't be feeling green this season and the three newest members of the team will make sure of that as right-handers Joe Woerman and Jonathan Plefka along with lefty Payton Tweddale signed on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old Woerman didn't play in 2009, because he attended flight school, but began the season at Triple-A Tacoma in 2008. With the Rainiers he was 2-8 with a 7.47 ERA in 21 games (16 starts). In 88.0 innings pitched he walked 69 and struck out 54. He also spent five games at Double-A West Tennessee where he went 1-3 with a 4.34 ERA while hurling a complete game shutout, the first of his career. In 29.0 innings pitched he walked 12 and struck out 20.

Woerman was an 11th round selection by the Seattle Mariners in the 2003 June Amateur Draft. He spent his entire career with the Mariners organization.

The 25-year-old Plefka had an outstanding season in 2009 with the Atlantic League's Bridgeport Bluefish. He was 5-4 with a 3.26 ERA in 33 games (one start) and one save. In 49.2 innings pitched he walked 29, struck out 28 while opponents hit.237 against him.

Plefka was selected in the 47th round of the 2006 June Amateur draft by the Los Angeles Angels. He spent two seasons in the Angels organization pitching in the Arizona League in 2007 and the Rookie Pioneer League in 2008.

The 24-year-old Tweddale spent his two professional seasons with the Kansas City T-Bones in the Northern League. The left-hander was solid last year going 1-4 with a 3.16 ERA in 39 appearances. In 37.0 innings pitched he walked 15 and struck out 41.

The Saints have signed 11 players during the off-season, six pitchers and five position players. Clubs may carry a maximum of 27 players into spring training and must have the roster pared down to 23 for the first 14 days of the season. After those 14 days the roster must be down to 22 players.

The Saints 2010 season begins on May 13 with a six game home stand, three with the Wichita Wingnuts and three with the Lincoln Saltdogs. Single game tickets go on sale Saturday, March 20 beginning at 10 a.m. For more information regarding tickets contact the Saints Ticket Office at 651-644-6659 or visit saintsbaseball.com.
